The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in Rome after a traffic stop Friday afternoon ended with gunfire.

According to the GBI, 61-year-old Jeron Bruce Bradford of Rome was shot and killed during the incident. No Rome Police Department officers were injured.

The GBI says the incident began at approximately noon Friday, September 11, when a Rome Police officer stopped a pickup truck in the 200 block of South Broad Street Southwest.

Preliminary information released by investigators indicates Bradford, who was driving the pickup, immediately got out of the vehicle and confronted the officer.

According to the GBI, the officer gave Bradford verbal commands, but Bradford allegedly refused to comply. Investigators say Bradford then pulled a gun from his pants and fired at the officer.

The Rome Police officer returned fire, striking Bradford. Bradford was transported to an area hospital, where he later died.

The GBI said Bradford’s body will be taken to the agency’s Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

As is standard in officer-involved shootings investigated by the agency, the GBI is conducting an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Once that investigation is completed, the findings will be turned over to the Floyd County District Attorney’s Office for review.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
