A 49-year-old man was arrested on a DUI-drugs charge after a Chattooga County deputy responded to a report of a possible vehicle fire in the Silver Hill Road and Jenkins Gap Road area.

According to a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office incident report, Jason Andrew Powers, 49, was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. on September 18.

A Chattooga County deputy was dispatched to the area around 12:32 a.m. and met EMS personnel and Wesley Inform, who told the deputy a vehicle had been observed smoking heavily from its vents.

The deputy reported finding Powers asleep in the driver’s seat. Powers reportedly woke up when the deputy opened the door and asked if he needed medical attention. The report says Powers then got out of the vehicle and waited while EMS personnel conducted their investigation.

After speaking with Powers, the deputy reported detecting what appeared to be a faint odor of alcohol and asked him to perform field sobriety tests.

According to the report, Powers showed several indicators of impairment during the testing. The deputy also reported that Powers’ pupils appeared constricted and that his eyes reacted poorly to light.

The report says Powers acknowledged taking prescription narcotic medication, but denied using anything else.

The deputy subsequently arrested Powers on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs.

The report says Powers’ wife later arrived and collected several containers and blister packs of medication recovered at the scene. Powers reportedly agreed to a blood draw, which was conducted at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Powers was then transported to the Chattooga County Jail without further incident.

The incident report does not state the results of the blood test.
