A Chattooga County school bus driver was arrested Wednesday after police said a child became caught in the bus door and was dragged along Union Street in Summerville.

According to a Summerville Police Department incident report, officers responded after witnesses reported that a child had become stuck in the door of a school bus as the bus pulled away. The child’s name is being withheld.

The report says the child suffered an injury to the left leg and was being checked by Atrium EMS before being transported to Chattooga ER for medical attention.

Police identified the bus driver as Kandy Nixon Craig.

According to the report, Craig told the officer she believed the child was off the bus and away from it before she drove away. Police later reviewed video from the bus.

The officer wrote that the footage showed the child stepping off the southbound bus when Craig closed the door on the child’s backpack and began driving before the child was completely free from the bus.

The report says bus barn supervisors arrived at the scene and took possession of the bus so the footage could be reviewed. Craig was transported to the bus barn, where supervisors told police she would need to undergo drug screening.

Craig was arrested at 5:54 PM Wednesday, September 30, and charged with reckless driving, driver must use care to avoid pedestrian, and safe operation of a school bus.

The accompanying citations state that the alleged violations stemmed from Craig closing the bus door on the child while the child was getting off the bus and then driving away.

The incident was investigated by the Summerville Police Department.
