Summerville Man Charged With DUI Following Traffic Stop

A Summerville man faces multiple charges following a traffic stop conducted by the Summerville Police Department.

According to citations provided to WZQZ, Antonio Francisco Tomas, 37, of Summerville, was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Failure to Maintain Lane.

The citations indicate the incident occurred on Sixth Avenue within the city limits of Summerville. The reporting officer noted that Tomas was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and was considered less safe to drive. The citation states that a breath test showed a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit.

A separate citation alleges that Tomas failed to maintain a single lane of travel and was involved in a vehicle accident while impaired.

The case is scheduled to be heard in Summerville Municipal Court at a later date.

Summerville Man Cited On Public Intoxication And Marijuana Charges

A Summerville man was cited by the Summerville Police Department on May 30 following an incident on West Washington Street.

According to citations issued by the Summerville Police Department, Raymond Edward Wood, 57, of Summerville, was charged with public intoxication under a city ordinance and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.

The citation states officers observed Wood on a public roadway while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The officer reported indicators including slurred speech and the odor of alcohol, and noted that Wood admitted consuming alcoholic beverages prior to the encounter.

A second citation alleges Wood was found in possession of a plastic bag containing a green leafy substance suspected to be marijuana. According to the report, the substance was located in a pants pocket and weighed approximately 0.34 ounces.

Wood was ordered to appear in Summerville Municipal Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Illegal Tire Dumping Reported On Vacant Summerville Property

A Summerville man has reported that dozens of tires were illegally dumped on a vacant property belonging to his late father.

According to a report filed by the Summerville Police Department, Jeff McCary told officers he received a letter from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources regarding an excessive number of tires located on property at 585 Maple Drive in Summerville. After receiving the notice, McCary visited the property and discovered what he described as abandoned tires that had been dumped on the site.

McCary told police he had no prior knowledge of the tires and did not authorize anyone to leave them on the property. He also advised officers that he has no knowledge of his late father authorizing anyone to dump tires there. According to the report, the property has been vacant for approximately five years.

The incident was classified by the Summerville Police Department as abandoned property. No suspects were identified in the report, and the case remains under investigation.

Chattooga County Assessor’s Office Informs Residents About Property Appraisal Visits

The Chattooga County Assessor’s Office is notifying residents that representatives from Georgia Mass Appraisal Solutions & Services, Incorporated — known as GMASS — are currently visiting properties throughout the county.

According to the notice released by the Assessor’s Office, the company has been contracted by the Board of Assessors to perform various appraisal services as part of county property assessments.

Officials say the inspections are being conducted in accordance with Georgia law and that appraisers will carry identification badges showing they are working for the Chattooga County Assessor’s Office. Their vehicles will also display the GMASS logo.

The Assessor’s Office says employee photos and vehicle information have been provided to Chattooga County 911 and local law enforcement agencies.

Suspicious Activity Reported At Summerville Advance Auto Parts

Summerville Police are investigating suspicious activity reported behind Advance Auto Parts on Commerce Street.

According to the report, officers responded after the store manager discovered someone had apparently tried to break into the business by damaging a power meter box near the back of the building.

Police also reported finding a pile of trash behind the dumpster containing items that did not appear to belong to the business, including toilet paper, canned foods, and other materials.

Extra patrols were requested around the property, and the investigation remains ongoing.
