The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of an inmate at the Gordon County Jail after the man was found unresponsive in his cell early Thursday morning, October 15.
According to Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston, jail personnel discovered the inmate unresponsive and immediately summoned emergency medical services. Medical personnel responded quickly to the jail, but the inmate did not survive.
Following the death, the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office requested an independent investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is standard procedure when an inmate dies while in custody.
GBI agents responded to the jail Thursday morning, along with Gordon County Sheriff’s Office detectives and the Gordon County Coroner, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Authorities have not released the inmate’s identity, age or information about why he was being held at the jail. The cause of death has also not been disclosed.
The Sheriff’s Office says the GBI investigation remains active and ongoing, with additional information expected to be released as it becomes available.
