Free Tree Giveaway Announced By North Georgia EMC

North Georgia EMC is once again helping members go green with its annual tree giveaway.

The utility will give away up to 200 free trees on Thursday, May 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as part of its Energy Saving Tree Program.

Trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of one tree per member. Participants must bring a copy of their NGEMC power bill to claim a tree.

Pickup locations include NGEMC offices in Calhoun, Dalton, and Fort Oglethorpe.

Available tree varieties may include Bur Oak, Red Sunset Maple, White Fringe Tree, Chickasaw Plum, and Highbush Blueberry, while supplies last.

The program is designed to help homeowners plant trees in the right locations to reduce energy costs by providing shade and lowering cooling needs during the summer months.

The giveaway is open to NGEMC members only.

GNTC Foundation Awards Over $48,000 in Spring Scholarships

The Georgia Northwestern Technical College Foundation has awarded $48,350 in scholarships and grants to 56 students for the Spring 2026 semester, helping offset the cost of tuition and educational expenses across multiple programs.

New Echota To Host Program On Cherokee Hunting Weapons

New Echota-Cherokee Capital State Historic Site in Calhoun will host “Stand Clear Weapons Are Here” on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 1 until 2 p.m. at the Vann Tavern. Park rangers will present a program exploring the hunting culture of the Cherokee and the traditional weapons used in southeastern Native American hunting.

The program will highlight early hunting tools including rivercane blow guns, atlatl and darts, spears and lances, clubs, and knives. Visitors will also have the opportunity to try some of the weapons featured during the presentation.

Admission is $6 to $8 and includes access to the program, the museum, a self-guided walking tour of the historic grounds, and nature trails. New Echota is located one mile east of Interstate 75 at Exit 317 on Georgia Highway 225 North near Calhoun. For more information, call 706-624-1321.

AdventHealth Gordon Foundation Offers Scholarships For Nursing And Allied Health Students

The AdventHealth Gordon Foundation is now accepting applications for scholarships for a select group of nursing and allied health students.

Current high school students, recent graduates who have earned their CNA certification, and students who have already been accepted into or are enrolled in a nursing or allied health program are encouraged to apply. Applicants must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Eligible allied health fields include ultrasound, paramedic/EMT, laboratory, respiratory therapy, and radiology.

Applications are available in person at the AdventHealth Georgia Foundation office at AdventHealth Gordon, Resource Center 2, 1035 Red Bud Road in Calhoun, as well as online. The deadline to apply is April 18 at 3 p.m.
