Summerville Police and Chattooga County Animal Control have been involved in a major animal rescue operation at a home on Bellah Avenue, where authorities discovered approximately 100 dogs living in unsanitary conditions.
According to a report by Jason Espy, the investigation began after neighbors complained about strong odors and constant barking coming from the residence.
Summerville Police Chief Brian Ozment said officers discovered a large number of dogs living inside the small home, along with animal waste and other unsanitary conditions.
The operation involved Summerville Police, Chattooga County Animal Control, county public works employees, city officials and volunteers who worked together to remove the animals and arrange for their care.
The Atlanta Humane Society was also contacted for assistance, although local authorities began removing the animals before outside help could arrive.
Chief Ozment told WZQZ News on Thursday that investigators are waiting to receive information from the rescue organizations concerning the animals’ medical conditions before warrants are issued.
The medical assessments are expected to help investigators determine the appropriate charges as the investigation moves forward.
The case remains under investigation by the Summerville Police Department.
