A 38-year-old woman was arrested on a DUI charge following a traffic stop in Chattooga County on October 29.
According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Riley Reeves was on patrol around 7:33 PM when he observed a vehicle traveling along Highway 27 near Reynolds Road with a brake light that was not functioning. The deputy also reported seeing the vehicle cross the center line several times.
The deputy initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as Julia Cecelia Westover, 38.
According to the arrest report, Westover appeared nervous during the stop, and Deputy Reeves noticed that her eyes were bloodshot and watery. The deputy also reported detecting the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
When questioned, Westover reportedly acknowledged smoking marijuana approximately three to four hours before driving. She also told the deputy she had smoked marijuana the previous evening.
Deputy Reeves administered several field sobriety evaluations, including a walk-and-turn test, a one-leg stand test and a finger-to-nose test. According to the report, Westover exhibited several indicators of impairment during the evaluations.
The deputy subsequently placed Westover under arrest on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs. She was also charged with a traffic offense related to the vehicle’s brake light.
The charges are accusations, and Westover is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
