The Summerville Recreation Department will begin holding games and activities in the old A.C. Carter Gym in Summerville this week.  The building was donated to the Summerville Recreation Department by the Chattooga County Board of Education.

A lot of hard work, along with help from a grant from the Menlo-Tillotson Charitable Foundation in the amount of $20,000 has helped get the gym in better condition for use by the recreation department.

The Old A.C. Carter High School only used the gymnasium one year after it was built in 1964.  When desegregation came to Chattooga County the gym was used by North Summerville Elementary School, but has been out of use for several years.

The gym has been renamed  the A.C. Carter – Dewey Hoskins Gym in honor of the faculty, staff and students of A.C. Carter School and also in honor of former Summerville City Councilman Dewey Hoskins.
