With help from a $20,000 grant given by the Menlo – Tillotson Charitable Foundation, the old A.C. Carter Gym will soon be back in use.  The gym which was last used by North Summerville Elementary School before it was consolidated into the new Leroy Massey Elementary School, will be used by the Summerville Recreation Department.

The gym will now be known as the A.C Carter – Dewey Hoskins Gym and will be used for basketball and other recreation department activities.  The building was donated to the rec department by the Chattooga County Board of Education.

The building was built in 1965 just one year before integration came to Chattooga County, as the gymnasium for the segregated black high school.  Work has been going on for about three years to renovate the building.  The building’s name will honor former Summerville City Councilman Dewey Hoskins, and the old A.C. Carter School.
