Starting last week, Chattooga County property owners began receiving their annual tax assessments in the mail.  Those assessments come from the Chattooga Board of Tax Assessors.  WZQZ News received several questions about the assessments from property owners thinking that what they received in the mail was their tax bill.

Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton tells WZQZ News that she was getting questions as well.  Hampton said, “I’m getting a lot of questions about assessment notices that are in mailboxes now.” Hampton reminds property owners those assessments are NOT your tax bill.   She says people should not be sending payments until tax bills go out later this year.

Hampton said, “Your tax bill will come from my office, have my name at the top, and list my office number for contact.  Digest season is just beginning, and I expect the property tax bills to be mailed in the fall.”

Meanwhile, the Chattooga County Tax Assessors office remind people that now IS the time to appeal your property taxes if you feel your property is not assessed properly.  Property owners desiring to appeal the assessment may do so in writing within 45 days of the notice.  Appeal forms are available on the tax assessor’s website HERE.  They are also available at the tax assessor’s office in Summerville.

When you file an appeal, you should include your name, address, phone number and grounds for appeal, asserted value and if you are an agent – authorization must be provided.
