Northwest Georgia, including Chattooga County, will see an active weather pattern develop this week as warm temperatures, rain, and even the potential for severe weather move in.
Warm Start to the Week
Unseasonably warm temperatures will continue through midweek, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s across the region. Clouds will gradually increase today as moisture returns to the area, but conditions remain dry until Tuesday.
Rain and Storms Return Tuesday–Thursday
A developing storm system to the west will bring showers and thunderstorms back to Northwest Georgia beginning Tuesday afternoon and continuing through Thursday.
Rain totals will vary widely across the state, but Northwest Georgia is expected to receive 1–2 inches, with some isolated pockets seeing up to 3 inches—especially near the Tennessee line. Areas farther south will see lighter rainfall.
With leaves still covering many yards and drainage areas, forecasters warn that localized nuisance flooding is possible where heavy rain falls repeatedly.
Marginal Risk for Severe Weather Tuesday
Chattooga County and the rest of Northwest Georgia are included in a Level 1 of 5 (Marginal) risk for severe storms on Tuesday afternoon and evening.
The main threats include:
-
Damaging wind gusts
-
Hail
-
A low-end tornado threat
Forecasters note that instability may be limited due to cloud cover, but strong wind shear and a sharp cold front could still allow a line of storms to intensify as it moves through Tuesday evening.
Storms Continue Into Early Wednesday
Rain is likely to continue Tuesday night into early Wednesday as the cold front pushes through the region. While the severe threat diminishes overnight, an isolated strong storm cannot be ruled out before dawn Wednesday.
Cooler, Drier Weather for Thanksgiving
Behind the front, high pressure will settle over the eastern U.S., bringing noticeably cooler temperatures just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.
-
Highs: 50s to low 60s
-
Lows: 30s to low 40s
-
Far North Georgia: Overnight temperatures may drop near or below freezing
The next chance of rain after midweek does not arrive until late in the weekend.
