Over two decades ago, voters in Chattooga County approved a board of elections.  However, the legislation required to establish the board was never introduced in the Georgia General Assembly. 

Chattooga County is one of the few counties who has an Election Supervisor instead of a board of elections.  That position is filled by the Chattooga County Probate Judge.

Former Probate Judge Jon Payne told WZQZ News as far back as 2008 that he was in favor of seeing the legislation introduced, but that legislation never happened.  Now, Chattooga County appears to be on the road to having a board of elections.

The board would have representatives from both the local Democratic and Republican parties serving and would oversee the elections in the county.

A public notice appeared in the local paper this week stating that legislation has been introduced to establish the board of elections for the county.
