After being closed for several weeks, Alabama Highway 117 between Mentone and Valley Head, Alabama has reopened, but the Alabama DOT says you should still expect delays.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has been rerouting commercial traffic down Georgia Highway 114 (the Lyerly Highway) at the request of Alabama officials because Highway 117 was cracking and shifting on the side of Lookout Mountain.  Large signs were placed in Summerville alerting truckers of the detour.

The Alabama Department of Transportation advised motorists shortly before 6 PM Wednesday that Alabama Highway 117 between Mentone and Valley Head is now open, following the first phase of a $1.4 million emergency repair to correct a landslide.

The section of highway was closed to traffic in early April following heavy rainfall that led to destabilization of the slope below the roadway.

Expect rough pavement and temporary striping. Single-lane closures and delays will ongoing until about mid-July.
