A late-night shooting in Ider, Alabama in neighboring DeKalb County has left one woman injured and sparked a significant law enforcement response. At approximately 11:26 PM on January 14, DeKalb County Deputies, along with the Henagar and Ider Police Departments, were dispatched to Red Bud Drive following reports of a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
The DeKalb Ambulance Service arrived shortly thereafter and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. Upon arrival, deputies and criminal investigators quickly determined that the shooting had originated from a nearby location on Woodland Drive. In response, the DeKalb County Special Response Team (SRT) was mobilized to secure the area and establish a perimeter around the residence where the incident occurred.
While SRT members were conducting a callout at the Woodland Drive address, they encountered a male suspect in a vehicle behind the residence. A confrontation ensued, leading to an officer-involved shooting as the male subject posed a direct threat to the lives of the SRT members. The suspect attempted to flee the scene but was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement.
Sheriff Nick Welden expressed gratitude that the situation did not escalate further. “I am so thankful this situation did not have a way worse ending. Law enforcement on scene did everything in their power to stop the individual without having to shoot at him, but when your life or the life of another is at risk, you have to do anything you can to protect yourself and that is what they did,” he stated. “I would like to ask you to pray for everyone involved; we will share more information as it is available.”
The incident remains under investigation, and authorities are expected to release further details as they become available.
