James Spann with ABC 33/40 in Alabama is perhaps the South’s best-known weatherman. The meteorologist with his trademark suspenders is known for extensive weather coverage during dangerous situations like the one that happened on Thursday as tornadoes struck across Alabama. Thursday, Spann was broadcasting on television when a tornado hit his own neighborhood.
Spann noted the tornado that was moving towards his own home and paused while broadcasting and could be seen using his own cell phone to text his wife and warn her of the impending storm. The tornado did significant damage to the Spann home, but Mr. Spann’s wife is safe. Spann resumed broadcasting throughout the night.

Many thanks to all of you who have reached out to me; a tornado produced damage at our home today. My wife was home when it hit, but she got the warning, was in our in-home shelter, and is fine. While we lost many trees, the home is intact and we will not have to “rebuild”. Please consider helping others across the state who have much more serious damage… some lost their homes and are homeless tonight. Thanks again for your kindness.
