Chattooga County got hit hard with a confirmed EF-2 tornado on Easter. That storm started near the Alabama line and crossed over into the Oak Hill Community shortly before 8 PM. Tornado sirens were heard in all four municipalities in the county again shortly before midnight when another strong storm, taking roughly the same path, hit the county. Around 40 houses received severe damage or were destroyed and up to 100 homes were impacted by the storm.
Chattooga EMA and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency have been doing damage assessment this week and the clean up continues around the county. Many have spent the week trying to deal with downed trees, damaged homes and washed out gravel driveways.
It looks like we could be in for another round of storms this Sunday evening. The National Weather Service says:
Severe thunderstorms will be possible across much of north and central Georgia Sunday night. The main hazards are likely to be damaging winds and possible tornadoes.
WZQZ will continue to monitor the weather throughout the weekend and bring you updates from the National Weather Service, the Georgia News Network and Channel 12 Meteorologist Patrick Core.
Before this weekend, be sure that you have batteries and other necessary supplies. Also, it’s a good idea to have your phone fully-charged before the storm hits. A battery powered radio is also a great idea!
