A shocking tragedy unfolded in Mentone on Friday evening when the DeKalb County 911 center received an emergency call from a resident reported a shooting at his home. According to law enforcement sources, the caller, a male individual, requested immediate assistance from law enforcement, prompting dispatchers to coordinate a rapid response while maintaining communication with him. During the call, the man revealed the devastating news that he had shot his wife and their dogs, expressing intentions to take his own life shortly thereafter.

Dispatchers worked diligently to keep the caller engaged, but communication was ultimately lost when the call was disconnected. Upon arrival at the residence, deputies discovered the bodies of a male and female, along with two dogs, all exhibiting apparent gunshot wounds. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation, enlisting the help of the JSU Center for Applied Forensics to assist with evidence collection and scene processing. Preliminary findings indicated that the male suspect had taken the life of the female victim before turning the gun on himself.

The DeKalb County Coroner’s Office, along with the 9th Judicial District Attorneys’ Office, were notified to assist with the ongoing investigation and to address the heartbreaking aftermath of the incident.

On Monday, DeKalb County, Alabama Sheriff Nick Welden expressed his condolences and gratitude for the collaborative efforts of local agencies involved in the response. “I would like to extend my gratitude to the Mentone Police Department, Valley Head Police Department, Ider Police Department, Valley Head Fire Department, and the North Lookout Mountain Fire Protection District for their assistance,” Welden stated.
