Chattooga County Commissioner Andy Allen announced earlier this week that the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded a $1 million grant for renovations at the historic Tooga Theater, located in downtown Summerville. This funding is part of a continued effort to enhance community spaces and promote economic development in the region.
The Tooga Theaterwas previously purchased by the county in 2015 from the Chattooga County Shrine Club, with financial assistance from a grant provided by the ARC. The upcoming renovations aim to restore the theater to its former glory, ensuring it remains a vibrant hub for entertainment and community events.
The ARC, which is responsible for investing in the economic and community development of the Appalachian Region, allocates federal funds appropriated by Congress to support such initiatives. The grant application process begins at the state government level, and all awarded grants must align with the ARC’s strategic investment priorities and state plans. In addition to the $1 million grant, applicants are required to demonstrate a commitment to provide matching funds, which can come from various sources, including cash, donations, loans, or in-kind contributions. These in-kind donations can encompass real property, equipment, supplies, services, training, or personnel time.
This grant falls under the umbrella of ARC’s broader commitment to community and economic development, exemplified through programs such as the Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) Initiative and the READY Appalachia learning tracks.
As plans unfold for the renovation of the Tooga Theater, community members and stakeholders are optimistic about the potential revitalization of this key cultural asset and its positive impact on the local economy.
