The Armuchee High School community is in mourning following the tragic death of freshman football player David Clemones, 15, in a multi-vehicle wreck Tuesday night. In response to the profound loss, the school’s home football game against Gordon Lee, originally scheduled for tonight, Friday, September 12, has been postponed until Tuesday, October 10.

Clemones, a promising freshman linebacker, was one of three individuals inside a truck when the collision occurred on the East Rome bypass at Calhoun Road, according to the Floyd County Police. Details surrounding the wreck are still being investigated.

The decision to postpone the game allows the Armuchee school community and the team time to grieve and process the sudden and tragic loss of one of their own.

The rescheduling will have a significant impact on both teams’ football schedules. For Armuchee, the October 10 date was originally slated as the third of its three bye weeks in its nine-game regular season. The Indians will now play games in seven consecutive weeks, beginning with their September 19 home game.

Gordon Lee, the visiting team tonight, was originally scheduled to play Gordon Central on October 10. That game will now be moved to October 17 to accommodate the new Armuchee vs. Gordon Lee matchup.

Tonight’s game was poised to be the first Region 7-1A Division I contest for both Armuchee and Gordon Lee. Barring any further postponements or reschedulings, Armuchee’s September 19 home game against Chattooga will now serve as their region opener.
