An arrest has been made in connection to the motor-vehicle death of a Georgia State Patrol trooper, the Department of Public Safety said. Trooper Jimmy Cenescar was killed on Sunday in a wreck near the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road exit.

According to the Department of Public Safety, Cenescar was attempting to stop a fleeing motorcycle for a traffic violation on I-85 North near Old Peachtree Road. The cruiser left the roadway and struck an embankment. Cenescar was rushed to Northside Gwinnett Hospital, but did not survive his injuries.

On Friday, the Georgia Department of Public Safety announced the arrest of Garrison Rodriguez, who was located and taken into custody in Norcross. Rodriguez faces felony murder, first-degree homicide, felony fleeing and attempting to elude, and other traffic-related charges, according to DPS.

Cenescar was employed with the Department of Public Safety since January 2023 and was a graduate of the 114th Trooper School, officials said. Before joining State Patrol, he worked for the Atlanta Police Department. Cenescar migrated to the U.S. from Haiti and went to Georgia Gwinnett College, according to school officials.
