An arrested Chattooga County Sheriff's Department Investigator spent Monday night in the Floyd County Jail. 

Joseph Matthew Hayes was released from the Dekalb County Jail, in Fort Payne, Alabama,  on a property bond at 9:45 a.m. on Monday , according to Dekalb County Jail officials. He turned himself into authorities in Chattooga County at 4:18 p.m. and after seeing a judge was transferred to the Floyd County jail. No bond has been set in Chattooga County so far, according to Chattooga Jail officials.

Hayes was initially charged in Dekalb County, Alabama with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug related objects. He is additionally charged in Chattooga County with possession of cocaine, possession of Hydrocodone, violation of oath of office by a public officer and two counts of theft by taking. The 33-year-old Sheriff's Department investigator and evidence custodian of the department is accused of taking drug evidence that was to be destroyed into his possession outside his duties as a police officer. 

It all began Thursday when a manhunt began after nightfall when family members, nor Sheriff's department personnel were able to contact Hayes for several hours. Hayes was involved in an incident in Alabama where he was in his Sheriff's Department vehicle with drugs allegedly from the local Sheriff's Department evidence room in his possession and  he is alleged to have  pointed his service revolver at a man and a woman at a store. Dekalb County authorities became involved which led to Hayes arrest.  

The GBI is investigating the incident.
