A historic number of property tax assessment appeals is hindering the tax process in Chattooga County.  But it isn’t just the county government that is waiting for the appeals to be processed, it is the county’s municipalities and school systems that are also waiting in order to proceed with the tax process.
The Chattooga Board of Assessors has voted to hand over the appeals process to workers in the tax assessors office to help speed up the process.  In the past, the board of assessors has heard all of the tax assessment appeals, but no other county in our area handles the appeals in that manner.  Instead, county workers work through the appeals and present them for approval.

The county has to get down to 8% of the appeals being resolved, or the total value must be less than 8% in order for the state to sign off on the assessments.  After that is complete, the tax bills still must be printed – a process that takes about two weeks, and then tax payers have 60 days to pay the tax bill.

As it stand, it could be 2024 before 2023 Chattooga County property taxes are due.
