Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry shared news about two important initiatives aimed at improving the local animal shelter’s operations and care.

The shelter has received a $30,000 grant from the Atlanta Humane Society for essential upgrades. This funding will allow for the complete resurfacing and epoxy treatment of the kennel floors in the dog areas, creating a cleaner environment that helps prevent disease spread. It will also fund the installation of ductless heating and air conditioning units, ensuring the dogs remain comfortable in extreme temperatures while they await adoption. During the renovations, the shelter will limit intake for about a week and is asking community members to consider fostering animals temporarily.

In addition, the Chattooga County shelter has secured another grant from the Atlanta Humane Society to host a low-cost spay and neuter clinic on October 28th and 29th. This clinic aims to continue providing affordable sterilization services to the local pet population, building on the success of previous events. The shelter will first contact individuals on the waitlist from earlier clinics to fill available slots before opening up any remaining appointments to the public.

Commissioner Elsberry urges residents to be patient during this process and not to call requesting to be put on the list at this time.
