Flooding Problems in Chattooga County – Lyerly Dam Road Still Closed

The heavy rain and winds caused several issues around Chattooga County on Tuesday night into the day Wednesday.  Multiple power outages were reported by North Georgia EMC and Georgia Power, primarily caused by downed winds and there were also reports of some transformers that were damaged.

The City of Summerville experienced problems with their water system on Wednesday caused by a power outage and a damaged pump at the main pump station.  City water customers experienced low water pressure as a result of the damage.
Chattooga County Public Works Director Joe Reed said on Thursday morning that Lyerly Dam Road was closed due to flooding.   Reed said that was the only road that was officially closed on Thursday morning.  The Chattooga River rose above flood stage (14 ft) before noon on Wednesday.  Late Wednesday evening a county transit bus was sent to the Dry Creek Area in Haywood Valley to transport several people who were trapped by flood waters at the campground near the intersection of Dry Creek and Haywood Valley Road.  The American Red Cross was called in to assist and the people were housed at the Coach Inn overnight.
