GNTC Names Semi-Finalists For 2016 GOAL Award
Four Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) students have been selected as the college’s semi-finalists for the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL), according to Dione Waddington, coordinator for the college’s GOAL program.

GOAL, a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG), honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state’s technical college students. GOAL winners are selected at each of the state’s 22 technical colleges as well as one Board of Regents’ college with a technical education division.
According to Waddington, a screening committee of administrators at GNTC selected the four semi-finalists from a list of students nominated by their instructors.
The four semi-finalists will advance to a second round of judging at the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce where a panel of business, civic, and industry leaders from the community will interview and evaluate the students and select one to be the college’s 2016 GOAL winner. The student judged most outstanding will be announced at the GOAL and Rick Perkins Awards luncheon held Tuesday, Feb. 2, at noon at the Coosa County Club in Rome.
The GOAL and Rick Perkins Awards luncheon is sponsored by The Seven Hills Rotary Club, Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, and Georgia Northwestern Technical College.
All college GOAL winners will compete in regional judging, which will include students from the other 22 colleges of TCSG as well as the Board of Regents’ college with a technical education division. Three finalists from the region will be named and will compete in the state GOAL competition in Atlanta and vie to be named as the 2016 statewide GOAL winner.
The state GOAL winner becomes the student ambassador for the Technical College System of Georgia. They will make many public appearances throughout the year, including addresses to the Georgia General Assembly, the Governor, and other the TCSG functions.
As the grand prize, a new automobile provided by Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia will be awarded to the state GOAL winner.
Georgia Northwestern Technical College provides quality workforce education to the citizens of Northwest Georgia. Students have the opportunity to earn an associate’s degree, diploma, or a certificate in business, health, industrial, or public service career paths. This past year, 13,734 people benefited from GNTC’s credit and noncredit programs. With an annual credit enrollment of 7,876 students, GNTC is the largest college in Northwest Georgia. GNTC has an additional enrollment of 5,858 people through adult education, continuing education, business and industry training, and Georgia Quick Start.
Authorities are still looking for answers after a fire caused massive damage at Josh Roberts Trucking Company on New Calhoun Highway. Reports said that firefighters continued to fight the blaze Wednesday and Thursday.
Company owners said that they will have to look for a temporary office while repairs are made.
Rome Fire Marshal Johnie Evans said that the fire burned a large hole through the roof of the building and caused heavy damage to the front office.
Evans added that he plans to look at video footage as well as continuing to investigate the scene.

Floyd County police have released information from a chase near Martha Berry Blvd on Tuesday night.
Reports said that an officer was dispatched to Dwight Street in order to arrest Terry LeAllen Scott, 42 of Rome, who had an active warrant from Chattooga County.
Officer Carlos Aviles said that he dispatched for ‘more units because of Scott’s priors of fleeing’. It was at that time he noticed a Dodge Durango turn into Warren Street from James Street and spotted Scott, who attempted to hide his face, and a passenger later identified as 28 year-old Cynthia Diane Rape of Trion.
Aviles told 911 that Scott was leaving and that the vehicle was speeding away, so as a result he attempted to pull the vehicle over.
Aviles said that it was then a chase ensued on Old Dalton Road with speeds reaching up to 93 miles per hour. The vehicle eventually came to a stop on Beard Road. Officers reported that Scott jumped out of the SUV and ran away on foot.
Aviles reported ‘I observed Mr. Scott was grabbing something around his waistline while running away.’ It was then the officer said he noticed Rape hiding under the vehicle. Rape allegedly told officers that Scott was running toward US 27 toward Rhinehart Equipment.
At this point a K9, along with numerous other officers, were called to help in the search for Scott.
Reports went on to say that Rape told officers that they also hid from them during a chase from January of last year.
Scott has yet to be apprehended.
Rape was arrested and charged with willful obstruction of law enforcement.
Scott is also now wanted for willful obstruction of law enforcement, eluding a police officer, speeding and reckless driving.

A routine traffic stop on New Rosedale Road led to Floyd County Police arresting a wanted fugitive from North Carolina. Reports said that officers stopped Joseph Walden Peacock, 44 of Winston-Salem, for a tag violation and discovered an open container. Officers also found that he was driving without a license.
A check revealed that Peacock was wanted on undisclosed felony warrants out of North Carolina.
Peacock was arrested as a fugitive from justice and also charged with three misdemeanors: Violation of the open container law, obtaining a license plate for the purpose concealing the identification of a motor vehicle and driving without a license.

A Rome woman was arrested on Thursday, she is being charged with theft by deception.
Amber Leann Nichols, a 39-year-old Redmond Circle resident, allegedly used another person’s social security number when applying for a loan for a vehicle.
She used the loan of $14,977 to purchase a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu.
Bond is set at $16,700.

A New York woman is being held in the Catoosa County jail without bond after police have charged her with the murder of a man whose body was found in the Chickamauga Battlefield Park in December.
Jennifer Alison Demott, 25, Geneva, N.Y., was arrested Tuesday, January 19th on charges of felony murder and exploitation or intimidation of an elderly person.
Bond has been denied for Demott at this time.
The investigation and subsequent charges stem from a Dec. 12 incident where a male body was discovered in Chickamauga Battlefield Park.
The man was later identified as 59-year-old Duane Hollenbeck, also of New York.
Hollenbeck’s body was discovered on a hiking/horse trail near Alexander Bridge Road.
Demott was one of four witnesses interviewed on the scene and was arrested six days later, on Dec. 18, on a charge of abuse or exploitation of an elderly person. Demott’s charges were upgraded to include murder as the investigation has progressed.
The investigation has revealed that Demott allegedly killed Hollenbeck by striking him in the head with a blunt force object, causing fatal head trauma.
One of the other witnesses in the case stated Demott was the killer.

MRS. KATHERINE L. ECHOLS CAMP, age 87, of Perennial Springs Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday, January 22, 2016, in the local Nursing Home. She was born, October 16, 1928, living her entire life on the family property in the Perennial Springs Community of Chattooga County, Georgia. She was a daughter of the late Charles Richard (Charlie) Echols, Sr. and the late Mary Berry Echols. Mrs. Camp taught school for two years during WW II and was the Office Manager of Echols Appliance over 65 years. She served on the Chattooga Democratic Committee for over 50 years and was a member of the Perennial Springs Baptist Church. Mrs. Camp was preceded in death by her husband, the late Roy Fayette Camp and a daughter, the late Mary Katherine Camp Bullard.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Caroline and Chuck Harris; son-in-law, Steve Bullard; granddaughter and grandson, Charlie and Sam Bullard; granddaughter, Marti Green; great grandsons, Camp Bullard and Cooper Bullard; special niece, Honey Housch; several Nieces and Nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 24th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Alton Stamey officiating, interment in the family plot of Perennial Springs Cemetery. Active Pallbearers Richard Echols, Greg Echols, Jim Echols, Erick Housch, Ben Housch, and Marty Green; Honorary Pallbearers special care givers, Opal Deering and Mary Rape, the ladies Sunday School Class of Perennial Springs Baptist Church, and the Staff of Oak View Nursing & Rehab. Center. Flowers are accepted or contributions to the Mary Camp Bullard Scholarship Fund at United Community Bank. The Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Sunday from 12 noon until the hour of service.
