Like a bad penny, the IRS scam has turned up once again in northwest Georgia and other areas.
We’ve received a number of reports that someone claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service has called and threatened the intended victim with arrest, if they don’t immediately pay their so-called “tax debt” to the IRS.
Let’s just get this part out of the way now: It’s a scam.
#1 – The IRS doesn’t work that way; if there is an actual issue with your tax returns you will be notified by mail – NEVER by phone.
#2 – The IRS doesn’t threaten you by saying “a law enforcement official is now on his way.” there now
#3 – They do NOT ask for payment over the phone, period.
That includes asking for a credit or debit card; nor do they ask for banking information; and they certainly never tell you to buy a pre-paid card and give them the account number.
The people calling are NOT with the IRS.
They have no power over you.
They can’t do anything to you.
One child was treated for minor injuries following a three-vehicle wreck involving a Floyd County school bus on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Trooper First Class Jeremy Battle with the Georgia State Patrol, the bus was making a stop westbound on Shorter Avenue in front of Rome Cinemas.
A Ford Explorer, traveling east had stopped for the bus, which had activated its lights and stop sign, and was struck from behind by a Dodge mini-van. After the impact, the Explorer continued east, traveling off the right shoulder, striking a tree. The mini-van veered to the left, crossed the center lane and struck the bus head on.
Three occupants in the mini-van and the driver and a passenger in the Explorer were taken to the hospital via EMS.
None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
According to officials with the Floyd County School System there were 30 kids from Garden Lakes Elementary on the bus.
That accident remains under investigation.

Your name did not have to be on the official ballot in order to get votes in the Rome City Commission election.
There were eight official candidates for six seats on the City Commission, but a number of other people, or should we say characters, received votes as well, according to the official and complete election results.
“Mickey Mouse” picked up write-in votes in the East Rome and North Rome precincts
Fellow Disney favorite “Goofy” got a vote in North Rome.
Others receiving write-in votes included “Tom Thhumb” (with two H’s) and “Barney Dinosaur.”
There was one vote for “Me” and several voters wrote in “No Incumbent” or “Anyone Else.”

Georgia Northwestern Technical College announced it was awarded a grant in the amount of $19,940 from the Georgia driver’s education commission.
The grant, which runs from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016, will help finance driver’s education locally by providing classes with 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind the wheel experience with a trained instructor.
“Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers and we are committed to providing students with the education and experience needed to avoid tragedy,” said GDEC chairman Harris Blackwood. “This grant will help Georgia Northwestern Technical College equip young drivers in the community to be safer when they get behind the wheel.”
GNTC is pleased to able to partner with the commission to offer driver’s education for young drivers in northwest Georgia. The training will have a direct impact on improving highway safety benefiting all the citizens of the region.
Classes will be offered on-site at Ridgeland High School, Rossville, Ga., beginning in January 2016 to students qualifying for scholarships, and behind-the-wheel instruction will be offered at Gordon Lee High School, Chickamauga, Ga.

A Chattooga County Deputy was dispatched to the Walmart on Highway 27 on Wednesday, in regard to a shoplifting incident. The deputy arrived shortly after 4:30 that afternoon, where two individuals were being detained.
According to store employees the pair, later identified as Robert Hunt and Rachael Womack had been observed walking throughout the store, stuffing a variety of merchandise into a purse – including batteries, a flashlight, fishing line, and other unidentified items.
The pair had apparently attempted to exit the store when they were confronted by store personnel, with the female refusing to cooperate.
Following a search of the purse, Womack was arrested for shoplifting and transported to the Chattooga County Jail without incident.
Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a harassment call Tuesday night in regard to the complainant’s 15 year old daughter allegedly being threatened.
The complainant told law enforcement that the subject had been threatening bodily harm to her daughter for approximately a week at that point, adding that she had been keeping a record of the threats that were issued.
The complainant was advised of the proper magistrate procedures necessary to obtain a warrant against the individual in question.
