This past Thursday night, the Chattooga County Republican Party conducted their monthly party meeting at the Chattooga County Senior Center. In a surprising turn of events, Commissioner Jason Winters addressed the party members and ultimately joined them as a Republican.

GOP Party Chairman Spencer Hogg stated in a Newsmakers interview earlier this week that the party didn't have a set date for when the commissioner was supposed to speak but he did express interest. AM1180 spoke with Mr. Hogg yesterday, and he said he was surprised that the commissioner decided he would speak to the party. Hogg said, "He was not on the ballot to speak, however, he did come forth when I opened the floor to all members and guests to speak."

Commissioner Winters asked if he could say a few words, and then asked if he could join the party and what that process was to do so. "Any citizen who wants to come join our party simply has to sign their oath of affirmation and pay their dues. It's not something that really requires total party acceptance," Hogg said.

Commissioner Winters joined the Republican Party, and faced virtually no opposition. According to Hogg, the party was very supportive of Winters, and he expressed interest in getting more involved in party activities.

The Chattooga County 4-H traveled to Wahsega 4-H camp this past weekend for the Junior Rally Conference.  It was a fun filled weekend, as well as a learning experience.  There were a total of 183 4-H’ers, green strings, teen leaders and adults that attended this exciting leadership weekend for the 6^th– 8^th graders. 

During this weekend the students learn leadership skills, the importance of team work, experience thinking outside the box all while having a blast.  $200.00 worth of Wahsega Canteen gift certificates were given away in the Glow in the Dark Easter Egg Hunt.

This Conference has a 4-H Talent Show each year and this year the Chattooga County 4-H is proud to say that we brought home 2 of the top place wins.  Ms. Natalie Peterson won 2^nd place and Bronson Champion won 3^rd place.  The Chattooga County 4-H is very proud of all of our youth as they strive to make the best better for Chattooga County.

Bi-Lo Supermarket #5406, a Rossville, Ga. establishment, is recalling approximately 11-22 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with pieces from a small plastic pop-up timer, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. (May 1, 2015)

The ground beef item was produced on April 23, 2015, in 1-2 lb. packages of “Bi-Lo Market Style Ground Beef.”  The products subject to recall have a sell by date of 4/25/15. These items were sold from one retail location to consumers from Georgia and Tennessee.  The problem was discovered by the company. The company notified FDA of the issue and FDA notified FSIS on May 1, 2015.  FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions or oral injury associated with consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.  FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

BBB Advice Can Help Parents Find Safe, Rewarding Summer Camps for Children 

Wise parents already are searching for summer camps that will keep their children safely occupied when school is out. The BBB advises parents to look beyond glossy brochures and pretty website pictures. The safety, health and satisfaction of children should be the camp’s top priority.  A great camp should be an enriching experience for your child. Camp staff should be well-trained, and your child’s health and safety must be their top priority.

When choosing a camp, parents need to use the same care and common sense they would use in evaluating a day care program. They should look for a camp that provides activities that are of interest to their child and appropriate for the child’s age and skill level.  Parents need to take time to visit camps to inspect facilities, ask about the staff’s training and experience, and find out how the camp handles medical emergencies. If the child is staying overnight, be sure to look at cabins, showers and other facilities that your child will be using.

Some camps, such as those organized around a particular sport, are highly structured and stress development of specific skills. Others are more flexible and give campers the opportunity to choose some of their activities. Your child’s interest and personality should be your guide in choosing an appropriate program. If the child is old enough, ask what activities he or she would enjoy at camp.

Parents should ask how long a camp has been in business and check with parents of past and returning students. Check the BBB’s website,bbb.org/atlanta, for the camp’s record on handling complaints.  The standards for day and overnight camps may be different, but each should put your child’s safety and well-being first.

The Georgia State 4-H Archery Competition was held last weekend, April 25^th, with a total participants of 739 students, as well as over 150 certified coaches and a great number of parents/volunteers that provided assistance for this event. 

The Chattooga County Archers was among the competitors at this State Event; with our Senior Compound Team bring home a 4^th place State win.  The Senior Team consists of Joseph Edwards, Trey Westbrook, Ashley Edwards, Ben Morgan and Brianna Bailey. 

The Junior Compound Team also competed and placed 14^th in the State.  The Junior Compound Team consists of Dylan O'Kelley , Alex Stewart, Madelyn Westbrook,  and Elijah Sargent.

Chattooga County 4-H would like to congratulate each team member for an outstanding show of making the best better for Chattooga County.  And deep felt appreciation to all the certified coaches, parents and volunteers that work with our youth in making the best better for Chattooga County.
