A woman called Chattooga County officers to her home on Dry Valley Road on August 31st after her home had been broken into.
The woman arrived home and noticed drops of blood on her floor throughout the house. She then discovered that a back window and back door had been broken and/or pushed in. The only item that she noticed missing was a safe that contained paperwork and silver dollars.
The incident is still under investigation.
On September 1st, around 8:45, Chattooga County officers traveled to Highway 157 after a strange discovery occurred.
A man's wife found their neighbor's dog inside her SUV. The pet was in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, but the strangest part was that all of the doors and windows were shut. The man called officers to file a report.
The man knew that the dog had not been inside about an hour before, because his daughter had gone outside to retrieve an item from the vehicle. His daughter told both her father and the officers that she did not let the dog in the car.
Both the man and officers traveled to the neighbor's home afterwards. The neighbor knew that the dog was not around, but he assumed that it was only walking around their property. Information was exchanged in case the dog roamed too far again.
An instance of property damage brought Chattooga County officers to Dakota Drive in Trion on September 2nd.
The property owner told officers that three strands of barbwire were cut behind his house. As a result, his horse was standing in his back yard this morning.
He believes that someone cut the wire so they would have easier access to walk through.
The damage was estimated to be around $60.
Chattooga County officers were called to Pecan Orchard Road after a burglary was reported.
The homeowner told officers that a home on his property had been broken into. The home is used by the homeowner as a storage building. The back door had been broken into by being kicked in. The hole from the kicking was big enough for a person to enter through.
The man said that nothing had been stolen or missing from the building as far as he could see. The only thing that the man noted missing was out in the yard by the house. An old Halloween dummy had been taken rather than anything inside.
The homeowner mentioned that he had seen some younger people outside close to the dummy and he believed that they lived in the Lake Wanda Rita Apartments. Officers confronted some younger residents to investigate. All of the individuals questioned denied that they were on the property.
The City of Menlo will be Closed On Monday, September 1st for Labor Day.
The regular Council Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Sept 2nd has been postponed to the following Tuesday, September 9th.
MRS. RUTH WAITS PONDER HOWELL, age 93, of Smallen Road, Lyerly, Georgia passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014, in the local rest home. Born in Polk County, Georgia on September 25, 1920, She was a daughter of the late George Stanley and Effie Coker Waits. Mrs. Howell was a member of Perennial Springs Baptist Church, and was retired from the sample department of the former Bigelow-Sanford Rug Mill. She was preceded in death by husband, the late Hillary Howell, Sisters- Edith McGraw, Faye Ozment, Carole Baker and Lodema Waits. One Brother- Kelsey Waits.
Surviving are- Daughter, Vivian Price of Lyerly, Son- Charles Ponder of Orange Park, Fla., Step-daughter- Gail Elrod of Summerville, Sister- Eddie Tinney of Summerville, Brother- Dudley Waits of Rockmart, GA. Eight Grandchildren, Fourteen Great Grandchildren, Four Great Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 27, at 12:30 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Byrd and Rev. Alton Stamey officiating, interment in Lyerly Cemetery. Active pallbearers- Tony McGraw, Bill Reed, Tim Kilgore, Dee Price, Todd Ponder and Tyler Wilson. Honorary Pallbearers- The Ladies Sunday School Class of Perennial Springs Baptist Church, Randy Marshall and Martha Chisolm. Visitation will be at the Funeral Home Wednesday from 11:00 A.M. until the hour of service.

The Kentucky Headhunters will be performing on the Coca-Cola Main Stage at the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair tonight!
The blended stylings of the Headhunters involves southern rock, bluegrass, and classic country. The Grammy-winning group will begin performing at 9:00 pm. Premium Reserved Seating is available for $20 a seat directly in front of the stage.
The Fair gates will open at 10:00 am and will close (meaning no more entry tickets will be available) at 11:00 pm. Festivities will continue after the gates close, so be prepared for a day filled with fun!
After a grueling competition between six local bands, a winner was announced last night.
Owens Gin, a band formed in Calhoun, performed southern rock and country style songs throughout the night.
Owens Gin received $500 prize money, and an exclusive photo shoot with the Fair's sole photographer, Images by Marlana.
Second place went to the The Holler, who received $250, and third place was awarded to Backroads Band, who received a $150 prize.
The Trion Bulldogs proved that they had the home team advantage last night after defeating the Gordon Lee Trojans.
The non-conference game resulted in a final score of Gordon Lee: 15, Trion: 21.
Gordon Lee scored seven points in the first quarter and eight points in the fourth. Trion scored 14 points in the second quarter, and seven in the fourth.
The Bulldogs will be playing at Armuchee High School next Friday night.
