MR. ELBERT ALLEN KEEN, age 73, of Keen Road-Summerville, Georgia, Teloga Community, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2013, morning in a Chattanooga hospital. A lifetime native of Chattooga County, Georgia, He was born to the late Elgin Elbert and Bertie Simmons Keen on March 6, 1940. Mr. Keen was a member of Beersheba Presbyterian Church, an avid golfer, and member of the Trion Golf Club; was production supervisor for PMI Industries, in LaFayette.
Surviving are His wife-Charlotte Ann Keen; daughter-Rebecca Dianne Boyd of Calhoun; son-Jeffery Allen Keen of Teloga; grandchildren-Stephen Keen, Alania Carpenter, Evie Ann Jones, Alan Keen, and Elizabeth Maddux; Six Great Grandchildren; sisters-Minnie Allmon of Trion, Jo Shamblin of Teloga, Evelyn Willingham of Summerville, Shelby Ward of Chelsea, and Mary Floyd of Lyerly; brother-David Keen, Sr. of Teloga; several Nieces and Nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 29th, at 2:00 P.M. from the Beersheba Presbyterian Church with Pastors Ken Terrell and Ronald Ragon officiating, interment in Macedonia Cemetery. Active Pallbearers Alan Keen, Stephen Keen, David Keen, Jr., Doug Shamblin, Sr., Doug Shamblin, Jr., and Mike Ward; Honorary Pallbearers PMI Industries Employees and TGC Members. The Family will receive friends at the Earle Rainwater Funeral Home Friday from 6 until 8 P.M.; Mr. Keen will also be in state at the Church Saturday, from 1 P.M. until the service hour.

Mrs. Mamie Ruth Carroll, age 77, of Summerville, GA, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, at the Shepherd Hills Nursing and Rehab.
Mrs. Carroll was born May 5, 1936 in Dirt Town, GA, daughter of the late E. E. and Jessie Mae Fincher Winters. She was a member of the Harrell Street Church of God, and prior to her retirement, she was employed with Riegel Textile. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by her brother, W. A. Winters, and sister, Evie Lee Holt.
Mrs. Carroll is survived by her husband, Charles Carroll; son, Ronnie Carroll; daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and J. R. Van Gurp; brothers, Grady Winters, Charles Winters, and Raymond Winters; sisters, Sarah Duckett, Marie Broyles, Hattie Dentmon, and Mary Studdard; grandchildren, Crystle Gordon, Miranda Sumner, Jarret Van Gurp, and A. J. Van Gurp; great-grandchild, Myles Gordon; and special friend, Linda Bailey.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Carroll will be held at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, June 22, 2013, from the Harrell Street Church of God with Rev. Denny Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the West Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Willie Holt, H. B. Winters, Stanley Edmondson, Johnny Edmondson, Randy Duckett, and Wesley Duckett. Honorary Pallbearers, whom the family would like to offer their special thanks, will be the Staff of the Shepherd Hills Nursing and Rehab and the Staff of North Georgia Home Health.
Mrs. Carroll will be in state at the Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 12:00 until 3:00 P.M. Saturday.
Representatives from the Town of Lyerly met with representatives of Sirens For Cities recently to discuss an upgraded warning system for the town.
Robert Thompson told the council in its regular meeting on Tuesday that said it was discussed that the town put in a tornado siren that goes off in Chattooga County, it will set set the sirens off automatically in the county's four municipalities. The sirens will go off as soon as it gets an alert from the National Weather Service in Peachtree City that there is a tornado warning. It will also go off if there is a warning received for Cherokee or Dekalb counties.
The system will also warn area residents through text messages and Twitter.
In all, Thompson said, the system would cost $19,500. But, as he understand it, Trion will pay the initial cost for the system and have it put into operation. Then, Summerville, Menlo and Lyerly will pay Trion, in a four-way split. Lyerly would have to pay an additional $1,997 because the town has a one-channel radio system, as opposed to the other counties.
Thompson said, Sirens For Cities will buy Lyerly's radio system for $300-$500 and Lyerly will then by a two-channel radio system.
Once the siren warning system is purchased, there will be no other costs or fees, according to Thompson. All alerts will come straight from the National Weather Service with no delays. Currently, Lyerly's warning system is activated by E-911 personnel or the Lyerly Fire Department. If there is a power outage the new system will still be able to activated by the Fire Department.
Only three counties in the state have the new system, according to Thompson, In all, it will cost Lyerly a total of $6,500.
In its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, the Lyerly Council sets its annual Clean Up Day and Rec. Day.
The council approved a Clean Up Day for June 22. from 8 a.m to around noon. Those who would like to participate will meet at the park.
Mayor Josh Wyatt said he received lots of good feedback on last year's Rec Day. The Council set this year's Rec Day for June 8 at 10 a.m.
Wyatt said he will send a letter to the Rome Braves and try to get the team mascot and a few players to be the Grand Marshals for the parade like last year.
A parade from the school to the park will feature the town's four spring ball teams. Hot dogs and drinks will be served and there will be a water slide.
The council also discussed a display case for the rec to put at the school to display the ball team's trophies. Most recently, the boys 7/8 boys Seminoles, and the 7/8 girls Lions won the Santa in Uniform tournament in Summerville. Both teams received large trophies.
A Summerville man was arrested on several charges recently after attempting to elude officers. A Be On The Lookout was ordered for a vehicle possibly being driven by Nicholas Trammell in the area of Harrisburg Road and Highway 337.
Once the vehicle was spotted, the driver of the vehicle is alleged to have attempted to elude officers. Trammell then is reported to have driven the car up a Highway 337 driveway , exiting the vehicle and running into a heavily wooded area. Since it was around 10 p.m. and dark officers lost visual contact but a short search ensued. A warrant was issued for Trammel who was later arrested on charges of removing.affixing license plate with intent to conceal/misrepresent; driving with a suspended/revoked license; and willful obstruction of law enforcement officers.
A shoplifting was reported at Walmart in Trion last week. According to the report, a woman had been in the store several times and had a large amount of sewing material but only actually paid $11.65 for one piece, according to the report. She is alleged to have taken the price tags off the other fabric. The cashier assumed the price was for all of the fabric. The woman's vehicle description and tag number was turned over to investigators.
A Trion woman told Chattooga County Sheriff's deputies that she left her Davis Road home for just a few hours one day last week, but returned to find several items missing.
She said she and a friend found the back door damaged as well as the door frame. Reported missing was a Nintendo 3DS, several games, a two-liter Dr. Pepper and a part of the woman's prescription medicine. The valued of the items taken is listed at $700, according to the report. The burglary was turned over to investigators.
Trion's loss to Charlton County on Monday put the Bulldog's dream of a state baseball championship to sleep. Charlton County proved victorious with 6-0 and 15-0 wins over the Bulldogs on Monday in Folkston. Charlton County will host undefeated Gordon Lee for the state championship.
Trion Mayor Johnny Ingle has announced a special called meeting coming up this Thursday, May 16 at 5:30 PM at the Trion Town Hall Conference Room. According to the mayor, the purpose of the meeting is to discuss fire truck bids and also an executive session is planned to discuss negotiations regarding the disposal of or leasing of Town of Trion property. The public is invited to attend.
