A traffic accident on Highway 27 at its intersection with Hwy. 140 Sunday afternoon.
The wreck involves two vehicles and occurred just before 5 p.m. Three lanes of Highway 27 were blocked by emergency vehicles.
Rome police continued their investigation into why a 72-year-old man shot a woman in the leg and then fired a shot at officers, authorities said.
Charles Terry Herndon was arrested late Thursday at 522 E. Eighth St. after officers used a Taser to stun him. He faces two counts of aggravated assault, and he remained in the Floyd County Jail on Friday night without bond, officials said.
According to Rome police Capt. Terry Autry, a 54-year-old woman approached the Eighth Street home at about 9 p.m. Thursday and spoke with Herndon.
“He went outside to confront her and then fired a couple of shots at a lady,” Autry said.
One of those shots from the .38-caliber struck the woman in her leg. She went to the hospital on her own before officers responded to the shooting, Autry said.
Police said they don’t know why Herndon and the woman argued. When officers arrived, they could see Herndon on his screened-in back porch. They gave him commands, but he wouldn’t comply, Autry said.
SWAT members and hostage negotiators were called to the scene after Herndon didn’t come outside, police said. At some point, Herndon’s wife had been removed from the house, the captain added.
“He just wouldn’t put the gun down,” Autry said. “Officers were afraid he was going to shoot them.”
At some point, Herndon did fire a shot in the general direction of the officers, Autry said. No officers were hurt.
“That’s when they tased him, and put him into custody,” Autry added.
Herndon gave no statement at the time, Autry said, and was taken to the hospital before being booked into jail.
It’s official: the Black Diamonds will headline for October’s Wings Over North Georgia Airshow.
This announcement comes on the heels of some bad news for all air shows via the federal government. Due to sequestration budget cuts, the Thunderbirds, the feature flyers booked for this year’s North Georgia Airshow, were grounded. Though not a formal replacement for the air force’s top flyers, the Black Diamonds will put on just as spectacular a show, says JLC Airshow Owner John Cowman.
The inaugural Wings Over North Georgia Airshow in 2012 drew thousands of people to the Richard B Russell Airport in Rome, and had a substantial impact on the local economy. Cowman expects to double the already impressive numbers of last year.
The Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Office reported that the economic impact to the Rome Community was $2.8 million, putting the event as the number one North Georgia event as far as economic impact.

The search is on again Sunday to find a Euharlee man who has been missing for over two weeks.
A fleet of volunteers teamed up with the Floyd County Sherriff’s Posse and the Dakota Dryer Foundation out of Breman early Saturday to comb the areas surrounding the Etowah River in Euharlee, searching for any trace of 28-year-old Blake Cowart.
According to authorities, Cowart went missing from his Euharlee home sometime after 10pm on April 3rd, leaving behind both his car and his cellphone. The Bartow County native suffers from short-term memory loss caused by a severe brain injury, and family members fear he might’ve fallen into the river located next to his home.
The recovery team will continue their search for the young man today, meeting at the Covered Bridge Country Store on Covered Bridge Rd at 1pm. They are in need of experienced kayakers and paddlers as they’ve been advised by authorities to focus on the section of the Etowah between Hardin Bridge and the Euharlee Bridge.
A Ridgeway Trion couple reported that a prowler had been in their home on Tuesday.
According to the report, the couple arrived home that afternoon to find that the ide door to their home was unlocked. Also, items inside a bedroom closet had been moved to the bedroom floor. In another bedroom, a window was open and the screen was missing, but nothing was out of place. There was also a chair placed outside, next to the home, underneath the bedroom window that had been opened. Nothing was reported missing from the home.

Mrs. Doris Arrie Lou Chandler Hall, age 84, of Menlo, GA died Saturday, April
13, 2013 at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Mrs. Hall was born April 29, 1928 in Chelsea, GA, daughter of the late John
Franklin Chandler and Ida Huie Willingham Chandler. She was retired from
Best Manufacturing and was a member of the Best Silver Club. Mrs. Hall was also a member of Faith Baptist Church in Menlo. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Hill Hall, and sisters, Linda Chandler and Patsy Chandler Baker.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, David and Teresia Hall; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Sam Ballard; 4 grandchildren, Kelly Hall, Scott Ballard, Chris Barnes, and Kathy Cooper; 8 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 16, 2013 from the Chapel of Mason Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Wilborn and Rev. Doyle Waters officiating. Burial will follow in the Alpine Cemetery with Rev. Barry Peppers officiating. Pallbearers will be Kelly Hall, Scott Ballard, Jeff Barnes, Tony Cooper, Donnie Hall, and Billy Edwards. Honorary Pallbearers will be caregivers: Opal Deering, Mary Rape, Emma Warren, Annie Hogue, Barbara Duke, Martha Strickland, Nell Dodd; and members of Faith Baptist Church.
