Chattoogans Report Oddities

A couple of strange incidents reported to the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department over the weekend.
 
In one instance, a Summerville man reported that the door handles were removed from his wife's  car. In another, a woman reported that some unknown person kicked in her apartment door for no reason.
 
According to the reports by the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office, officers were dispatched to a South Third Street home on Monday. The resident there reported that his wife had come home and he noticed that both the driver and passenger side door handles had been removed from her 2001 Ford Explorer. No other damage to the vehicle was reported.  
 
The door incident also occurred on Sunday. A Back Penn Road woman reported that while taking her husband to work on Sunday, between 7 and 7:45 p.m. someone had kicked open and damaged the front door to their apartment. There was nothing missing from the apartment and no other damage, according to the report..

Breaker Box Stolen From Lyerly Church

When they realized there was no  power at the Cedar Springs Baptist Church in Lyerly Monday, church members naturally called the electric company. The problem wasn't that the power had been shut off. The church breaker box had been removed.
 
According to the report, an employee of North Georgia Electric responded to the call that the electricity was off. He reported that when he arrived at the church on  Taliaferro Springs Road, he found that the face of the power meter had been removed and was on the ground. A church member arrived and went inside the church to find that the breaker box was gone.
 
The incident is under investigation.

Scamming Still Going On In County

Another Chattooga County resident has reported that scammers are continuing to harrass residents in the area.
 
On Monday, a Highway 100 man reported to the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office that he received a phone call saying that he had won a sweepstakes and a new car. He was told all he had to do was send a processing fee through Western Union to claim his prize.  The man was told to wire the money to a Kentucky address. 
 
The Chattooga County Sheriff's Office has warned residents that if you haven't entered a sweepstakes or contest, you probably didn't win one. Also, if you do win any sort of prize, having to pay money to receive it, is a pretty much evidence that you are being scammed. Remember, if it's too good to be true, it probably isn't.

Lady Trojans Win State Class-A Championship

The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans have won the State Class-A Championship for the first time in the school's history.

They defeated the number-one seed, Randolph-Clay 81 to 56, in the GHSA Class-A Public School title game Thursday afternoon in Macon.

Bag Of Items Stolen From Ridgeway Drive Home

Residents of a Ridgeway Drive, Trion, home Monday reported that someone visiting their home took off with a bag of items taken out of the bathroom.
 
According to the report, two people were visiting the home. One reportedly went inside the bathroom and took the duffle bag that contained a pair of Carhart Jeans, seven bottles of cologne, three wrenches and miscellaneous clothing. The items have an estimated value of $76, according to the report. The complainants were advised of Magistrate Court procedures.

Local Republicans Meeting On Saturday

The Chattooga County Republican Party will be meet Saturday, March 9, at the First Presbyterian Fellowship Hall for their Precinct Mass Meeting at 9 a.m. and the 

County Convention at 10 a.m.
 
After delegates and alternates have been elected, the group will elect officers for the 2013-2014 term. The following offices are expected to be filled: chairman, vice chairman, secretary, treasurer, and 
parliamentarian.
 
The local Republican party will continue to meet every third Thursday at China restaurant, located behind the McDonald's in Summerville. The regular monthly meeting of the Republican Party begins with a meal at 6 p.m. followed by the business meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Resolution On Framework For Fireworks Sales Passes Senate

A resolution that would set the framework for the sale of fireworks in Georgia passed the Senate today by a vote of 44 to 5.

Senate Resolution 378 contains a proposed constitutional amendment allowing local authorization in regards to the sale of fireworks in Georgia, with taxes on the fireworks being exclusively used for trauma care and firefighter training. SR 378 was sponsored by Sen. Jeff Mullis (R – Chickamauga).

“SR 378 will allow local cities and counties to write their own rules in regards to fireworks sales. In addition, the sales tax on these purchases will raise and estimated $5 million each year for vital emergency services,” said Sen. Mullis.

SR 378 is companion legislation to SB 229, which details the regulations and legalities pertaining to the sale of fireworks in Georgia. The proposed constitutional amendment enabling the functionality of SB 229 would appear on Georgia ballots in November 2014.

If SR 378 is approved by local referendum, cities and counties in Georgia will be charged with writing specific rules about the sale of fireworks within that specific jurisdiction.

The resolution will now transfer to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Former Chattooga Cheerleader Makes Dalton State’s First Squad

A former Chattooga High cheerleader has signed on with Dalton State to be one of the college's first 13 cheerleaders.
Kandi Adams graduated from Chattooga High in 2009, according to principal Jeff Martin. She is from Summerville and was a member of the Chattooga Varsity cheerleading squad.   
According to Dalton State cheerleading coach Robyn Newell. the squad's main goal is to support other athletic teams and to "spread cheer throughout the campus and community."  
The aim is for the team to be a highly competitive cheerleading squad. Newlell said, "the competitive roster will be set following open tryouts this spring. The Dalton State cheerleading open tryouts will provide an opportunity to fill the 26 spots left on our roster."

An official induction took place Friday night.
