The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) is teaming with Mohawk Industries to help fill job vacancies for experienced twisting operators at its manufacturing facility in Calhoun.
Recruitments will be held at two GDOL career centers from 8 a.m. until 12 noon on Wednesday, March 6, and Monday, March 11. Company representatives will be available at the GDOL’s Rome Career Center, located at 462 Riverside Parkway. They will also be at the GDOL’s Dalton Career Center, located at 1406 Chattanooga Avenue.
Applicants should bring copies of their resume and be prepared to interview. The company requires a minimum of six months manufacturing/tufting machine experience.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age due to U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. They must also have a high school diploma or a General Education Diploma (GED) and bring two forms of identification.

The Georgia Department of Labor’s (GDOL) LaFayette Career Center will help Hays State Prison fill about 45 jobs for correctional officers at the prison in Trion.
There will be two recruitments. The first will be held Tuesday, March 12, from 2-6 p.m. at the Chattooga County Civic Center, located at 44 Highway 48, across the street from the BB&T Bank, in Summerville. The second recruitment will be held Wednesday, March 13, from 12:30-4:30 p.m. in the community room at the LaFayette Housing Authority, located at 300 South Oak St. in LaFayette.
While experience as a correctional officer is not necessary, applicants must be at least 18 years old and bring to the recruitments a high school diploma or a General Education Diploma (GED), along with their COMPASS, ASSET, SAT, or ACT test scores. Also, they must bring a driver’s license, U.S. Social Security Card, birth certificate, or Selective Service Card, if they are between the ages of 18 and 25 years old. Those with prior military experience should bring copies of their Department of Defense (DD 214 member 4 Form).
The starting salary for correctional officers at the prison is $26,754, plus as much as 10 percent more for those with prior military service.

Regardless of what happens as a result of the current crisis of the week in Congress Chattooga County payrolls have taken a tumble. With only a whimper at the year-end compromise between the President and Congress the average paycheck worker in the United States took a direct hit with the restoration of the payroll tax cut.
Rates increased from 4.85% back to 6.85% for FICA (Social Security). Chattooga County Chamber of Commerce Director David Tidmore said "I'm not going to address the merits of restoring this tax, but it comes at a very bad time for a struggling economy in bad need of the consumer to lead the way out of the Great Recession" Tidmore outlined the impact below:

More than 120,000 Georgians still receive a paper check for federal benefits, but that all ends today.
The Treasury Department wants social security and other federal benefit recipients to switch now to either direct deposit or the Direct Express Mastercard.

Before you call gather your information, including Social Security number or claim number, the 12-digit federal benefit check number and the amount of the most recent check. If choosing direct deposit, you'll also need your bank's routing transit number, account number and account type. There are no fees to receive benefits electronically.
Chattooga County .22 Rim fire Team went to a District Shoot in Griffin, GA. The Shoot Team consisted of Austin Allen, Brandon Allen, Cody Conner, Daulton Hegwood, and Kayla Hix. Coaches attending were Daryl Allen, Vanessa Allen, Alan Hix and Mike Hegwood.
Austin Allen, Brandon Allen, and Cody Conner placed in the Shoot, all receiving Silver Awards. They will be competing several more times in the upcoming months.
Sen. Chuck Hufstetler (R-Rome) was recently appointed to serve on the Georgia Commission on Men’s Health (CMH) by the Senate Committee on Assignments. The Commission is comprised of eleven members including healthcare professionals, legislators and Heavyweight Champion Evander Holyfield.
“I am honored to serve on this commission and look forward to working with other members to address men’s health concerns in our state,” said Sen. Hufstetler. “We will focus on developing statewide opportunities to promote awareness, disease prevention, wellness, and positive behavior changes for the betterment of all Georgians.”

Governor Casey Cagle said. “This is an important commission that has done a great job highlighting the mental, physical and social health obstacles facing Georgians. The CMH was created under House Bill 1235 in 2000 to address the ongoing, increasing and predominantly silent crisis in the health and well-being of Georgia’s men. The CMH functions to improve men’s health outcomes and monitors proposed and active state and federal policy/legislation impacting men’s health.
Sen. Hufstetler also serves as the Vice-Chairman of the State and Local Government Committee and as a member of the Education and Youth, Health and Human Services and Science and Technology committees.
A representative from the Fairbanks Company, 202 N. Division St., Rome, said the company sent $50,000 to a vendor in China but later found out the vendor’s account was compromised, according to Rome police report.
According to the report:
The company representative said he had received an email updating the vendor’s bank account. About $50,000 was transferred into the updated vendor’s account noted in the email.
But officials with the Chinese company said their email account was compromised and they did not change their bank account number.
Rome police detectives told the Fairbanks representative that since the money went to China they would not be able to prosecute the crime.
The Town of Trion Council Thursday night approved to apply for a $500,000 grant to redo the sewer system in Frogtown. A public hearing on the measure preceded the meeting.
The Council also approved a bid by Prestige Buildings for $29,885 to redo the sidewalk on Dalton Street, near the recreation department. That amount was less than the town had budgeted for the work.
An amendment to the town's charter was also approved allowing the Mayor to vote if a tie needs to be broken.
In other business, the town opened bids for the mowing of its cemeteries. The measure was tabled and the issue is expected to be voted on in a called meeting in about two weeks.
