A representative from the Fairbanks Company, 202 N. Division St., Rome, said the company sent $50,000 to a vendor in China but later found out the vendor’s account was compromised, according to Rome police report.

According to the report:

The company representative said he had received an email updating the vendor’s bank account. About $50,000 was transferred into the updated vendor’s account noted in the email.

But officials with the Chinese company said their email account was compromised and they did not change their bank account number.

Rome police detectives told the Fairbanks representative that since the money went to China they would not be able to prosecute the crime.

The Town of Trion Council Thursday night approved to apply for a $500,000 grant to redo the sewer system in Frogtown. A public hearing on the measure preceded the meeting.

The Council also approved a bid by Prestige Buildings for $29,885 to redo the sidewalk on Dalton Street, near the recreation department. That amount was less than the town had budgeted for the work.

An amendment to the town's charter was also approved allowing the Mayor to vote if a tie needs to be broken.

In other business, the town opened bids for the mowing of its cemeteries. The measure was tabled and the issue is expected to be voted on in a called meeting in about two weeks.

The Sunshine Festival will be back in Trion this year.

The Trion Council in it's regular monthly meeting Thursday night gave approval to the local Chattooga Baptist Association to host the event at the town's track field.

The Sunshine Festival  is set for September 21. 

The Trion Bulldogs this past weekend took down top ranked Clinch County in South Georgia and the game proved nothing short of an instant classic.

Both teams threw their aces on the mount and both happened to be hard throwing southpaws. Trion's pitcher being Donald Morgan. The game was practically centered on the pitchers with neither leaving anything on the mount. 

The scoreboard was a stalemate of 0-0 until the sixth inning. Cody Brown reached base after being hit by a pitch. McKenzie Morrison was sent to run for Brown. Junior Brian “Boomhower” Wilson singled to center. The stars had finally aligned for the Bulldogs once Caleb Tinney stepped into the box. Tinney ripped a hard single to right field scoring Morrison. The run would prove to be all Donald Morgan needed on the mound. 

Donald Morgan, senior, had a tremendous day on the mound. Morgan recorded six fly outs and four groundouts. Morgan let one slip and kicked a Clinch batter just above the knee. first pitch strikes to 18-29 batters. Only one batter was walked and Morgan struck out eleven batters.

Trion's Coach Lanham said, "it's the best high school game I have been a part of in a long time." That coming from a coach who has earned over 100 baseball wins. 

This win comes off two blow out winds against Gordon Central.

The Clinch County game was scheduled to be a two-game weekend, but due to inclement weather the Dogs had to settle with just one game.  

In recent Trion High School news, the Reading Bowl Team finished first at the regional competition at Pickens County.  This past weekend the Reading Bowl Team finished third at the divisional competition.

The Trion girls’ Soccer Team is 3-0 with victories over Sonoraville, Ridgeland, and Coosa. 

And, the tennis team has their first match of the season on today, February 28^th.

An employer of a contractor working at Hays State Prison in Penville reportedly compromised security at the prison and is not longer working there.

Hays Warden Rick Jacobs said the worker did not bring contraband onto the prison grounds as AM1180 was initially told, but did compromise the security of the prison. He said it was not a state employee but the employee of a contractor working at the prison.  

Jacobs said the incident occurred about a week ago. He said he had a conversation with the worker and that worker chose to cut ties with the prison. No charges were filed.

Lafayette Police are working on an indecent exposure case reportedly early Sunday morning.

A white male is alleged to have entered the Kangaroo Express store on North Main around 5 a.m. Two women inside the store, the cashier and a customer, told police the man exposed himself in their presence, then left the store on foot.

The incident was caught on store video and police later held a photo line-up in which a suspect was identified. The department reportedly is waiting for a warrant to be issued for the suspect.  

The Couple rescued from a Dalton house fire last week and resuscitated at the scene have both died at the Burn Center in Augusta.

Danny and Joy Hooper were taken off life support on Tuesday. A family member said they had not been expected to recover.

Firemen restarted Danny Hooper's heart and used techniques to get Joy Hooper breathing again, after they were removed from their burning house. They were taken to Hamilton Medical Center within 30 minutes and later flown to Augusta for treatment. Dalton firefighters say the house had no working smoke detectors.
