The Town of Trion will have their regular Workshop / Council Meeting in the Town Hall Conference Room, Thursday, December 20, 2012. The Workshop will begin at 6:00p.m.and the Regular Meeting will follow shortly after.

This past Thursday a Summerville man reported to the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department that almost $8,000 worth of costs were fraudulently charged to his credit card. William Mercer Thomas, of Sarah Jane Lane, Summerville, said several unauthozed transactions were charged to his Visa card. They included two transactions at 84 Lumber Company for $932.94 and $1865.88; a transaction at Home Depot for $2897.85; and a charge at CMC Rebar for $2041.00.  Thomas contacted the manager of 84 Lumber and there apparently is camera footage of the suspect. The lumber company also reportedly got the suspects ID and supposed telephone numbers. That information is to be released to law enforcement personnel, according to the report.

A Chattooga County resident Last week reported that her home was burglarized while she and her children were inside the home. According to the report by the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department, the Lon Reyholds Drive, Lyerly  woman said that she and her children woke up on Wednesday, Dec. 12, and everything was fine. She said they laid back down and when they awoke at 9:30 a.m. they found the front door open. Missing was the woman's purse and a DS Game System. The purse reportedly contained medication, birth certificates and social security cards, as well as several pieces of jewelry. Now, the woman said, the front door doesn't shut and can't be locked.

A Chattooga County man is charged with bloodying a child's nose on Sunday, Dec. 16. According to the report by the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department, 55-year-old Benjamin Blalock of a Fish Hatchery road address, is accused of hitting the child in the face. When officers arrived, the child was holding a rag to his bloodied nose and there was blood on his nose, hands and clothes. There reportedly was blood splatter on the porch, on the living area floor, and on the kitchen floor. The boy's mother, who reportedly was on the porch when the incident occurred,  said an argument began when the 10-year-old boy wanted to cook noodles and his step-grandfather cut off the water. The boy reportedly held up his fingers to the man in an obscene gesture and the man is alleged to have hit the boy in the face. According to the report, the boy has been diagnosed with autism. He was transported to Redmond Medical Center by Redmond EMS, according to the report. Blalock was arrested and charged with first degree cruelty to children, excessive physical or mental pain. 

 Some Georgia schools are reviewing their security plans following the shooting massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut.

The interim superintendent of Rome's city schools, Lucian Harris, says he's going to assess procedures and meet with faculty members soon to discuss what teachers can do to prepare for such a crime.

In Savannah, Chatham County Public School Police Chief Ulysses Bryant says the district goes through "what if" scenarios to prepare for the worst. He says law officers already are familiar with school layouts.

With classes resuming on Monday, Gwinnett County police are planning to provide extra presence around schools to prevent copy-cat incidents.

Georgia PTA President Donna Kosicki says every state school has a plan of action in case of an emergency, but parents also must do their part.

A Death Row inmate had a hearing in Chattooga County Court Monday morning.

Jonathan Jarrells is accused of a 1988 murder in Chattooga County in which he beat a woman to death with an iron, and also beat her sister, according to District Attorney Buzz Franklin. The sister was not killed. Jarrells' received a death sentence for that murder.

Jarrells is appealing the conviction saying that he is mentally retarted and cannot be executed under Georgia Law. Monday's hearing, which lasted about 15 minutes, was to determine that Jarrells had proper representation. 

The next step, according to Franklin, is for Jarrells' attorney to file motions and then to set another hearing. Jarrells is being housed in Jackson, Georgia.

A large fight in the parking lot of IHOP early Friday morning escalated into shots being fired, according to Rome police reports.

According to the report:

Three women entered the restaurant, located at 35 Riverbend Drive, at about 2 a.m. and began to fight.

After the night manager told them to “take it outside,” a larger fight began in the parking lot. That’s when the night manager heard three gunshots.

A man then came into the restaurant bleeding from his hand and went into the restroom. He left a short time later.

The report did not state whether or not the man sustained the injury from one of the gunshots.

Officers responding to the night manager’s 911 call saw several vehicles traveling in the opposite direction of the restaurant before arriving and found no one in the parking lot.

Officers found two unfired 9mm bullets and three 9mm casings in the parking lot.

There were no suspects at the time of the report. Video from the restaurant’s security cameras was supposed to be handed over to detectives Friday.
