The GBI has launched a criminal investigation against the Murray County Chief Magistrate Judge who resigned on Wednesday amid allegations of wrong doing. Bryant Cochran is accused of pre-signing blank arrest warrants for local law officers and propositioning females who came before his court, for sex. GBI Director Vernon Keenan said the matter contained very serious allegations against Cochran. Cochran issues a statement accepting responsibility for the pre=signed warrants that were left for officers to fill out when he was not around. The Judicial Qualifications Commission asked the GBI to join the investigation.
A Living History Weekend at Point Park Battlefield on Lookout Mountain continues through Sunday (Aug. 19). Volunteers will represent federal infantry soldiers with rifle-firing demonstrations. It's from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. today at Point Park. For more information call 423-821-7786.
An exhibit
An exhibit highlighting transportation in Walker County is on display at the Chattooga Academy in LaFayette. The exhibit includes photographs of early service stations and car dealerships in LaFayette. including the Hupmovile dealer. Also included are the old train depot's ticket booth and a model train display. The exhibit will be open on Sundays from 1-3 p.m. through September and is free.
As the season winds down and end-of-summer celebrations ramp up, authorities throughout Georgia are launching a crackdown on drunken driving.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Governor's Office of Highway Safety announced Friday that police, sheriff's deputies and state troopers will be aggressively looking to pull over and arrest impaired drivers from now through the Labor Day weekend.
State officials say 298 people were killed in highway crashes that were alcohol-related in Georgia in 2010. That was roughly one-fourth of all traffic deaths in the state.
Harris Blackwood, director of the Highway Safety office, says crackdowns targeting drunk drivers can help reduce alcohol-related crashes by up to 20%.
