Georgia Power Prepared For Severe Winter Weather

ATLANTA – Jan. 6, 2017 – With the threat of snow and sub-freezing temperatures throughout Georgia this weekend, Georgia Power continues to monitor the changing weather conditions around the clock and is mobilizing crews, prepared to respond to any service interruptions which may occur.

Georgia Power reminds customers to be prepared and keep safety first before, during and after severe weather. The company recently partnered with state and federal agencies to host the first-ever Georgia Power PrepareAthon! featuring a series of informational severe winter weather preparation videos. The videos can be viewed at GeorgiaPower.com/PrepareAthon and on the company’s YouTube Channel.

Outage Alerts: Subscribe to the free Georgia Power Outage Alert service to receive personalized notifications and updates via text message.

Chattooga DFCS will be closing today at 3:30 pm.  Reports of child abuse or neglect can be made to 1-855-422-4453 or by calling 911 for emergencies.  The office will re-open on Monday, January 9th at 8:00 am.

Georgia Department of Labor offices in State of Emergency area close today.

ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Labor’s (GDOL) Central Office in Atlanta and career centers in the areas included in Gov. Nathan Deal’s State of Emergency for Disaster Preparedness declaration will close today, Friday, Jan. 6, at 1 p.m.  The declaration is because of the possibility of extreme winter conditions in the affected 78-county area.

The career centers in the affected area are in, North Metro Atlanta, South Metro Atlanta, Athens, Augusta, Blue Ridge, Carrollton, Cartersville, Cedartown, Clayton County, Cobb-Cherokee, Columbus, Covington, Dalton, Gainesville, Griffin, Gwinnett County, Habersham Area, Houston County, LaFayette, LaGrange, Macon, Milledgeville, Newnan, Rome, Thomson and Toccoa.

The GDOL will reopen when weather permits.

The public is encouraged to monitor the GDOL web site at gdol.ga.gov for continuous updates on schedules for career centers and other offices.

Chattooga and Trion on Regular Schedule Friday

Chattooga County School Superintendent Jimmy Lenderman says that Chattooga County Schools will be on regular schedule on Friday morning.  They will continue to monitor the weather situation and may make a decision about early release later in the day.

Trion City Schools will also be on regular schedule Friday.

Mr. Herbert Howard Edwards, Obit (H&Sons)

 Mr. Herbert Howard Edwards, age 75, of Lyerly, GA, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016, in a local medical facility.

Mr. Edwards was born on May 21, 1941 in Lyerly, GA, son of the late William Clarence Edwards and Iva Nell Hall Edwards. He was a graduate of Lyerly High School and attended several off campus programs through University of Georgia and from Coosa Valley Technical College. Prior to retirement, Mr. Edwards was associated with Georgia Power for 40 years. He and his wife, Barbara enjoyed traveling. They visited numerous National Parks and most of the 50 United States. They also traveled to Mexico, Dominican Republic, Canada and the Virgin Islands. Mr. Edwards had several passions, like running, playing softball and trout fishing. He enjoyed life and being with his family especially, spending time with his grand and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his aunt, Mildred Goodson.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Barbara Jo Grigsby Edwards, Lyerly; daughter, Karen Browning, and her husband, Roger “Teddy”, Lyerly; Twin sons, Kenneth Edwards and Kevin Edwards, both of Cedar Bluff, AL; grandchildren, Kristofer Browning, and his wife, Kellee, Summerville, Joey Browning, and his fiancé, Courtney Chandler, Dawsonville, Katie Tucker, and her husband, Eric, Centre, AL, Lauren Edwards, Lyerly, and Seth Edwards, Lyerly; great-grandchildren, Dixie Edwards and Kenzie Edwards, both of Menlo, Lashley Day, Lyerly, Kole Browning, Summerville, and Ella Tucker, AL; a sister, Cathie Warren, and her husband, Robert, Menlo.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 8, 2017 from 1 until 3 pm at the Perennial Springs Circle B. Farm, 1516 Fish Hatchery Road, Summerville, GA 30747. A memorial service will follow at 3 pm.

Mr. Edwards was cremated according to his wishes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mr. Edwards, to the American Heart Association or to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.

Mr. James Alvin “Juke” Smith, Jr, Obit (C)

Mr. James Alvin "Juke" Smith, Jr. age 62 of Summerville, GA passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 in Floyd Medical Center. Mr. Smith was born April 8, 1954 son of the late James Alvin Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Jewell Smith. He was self-employed as a Construction and Carpenter worker. Mr. Smith loved to fish, shoot pool, and hang out with friends. Mr. Smith was Baptist by faith.

Mr. Smith is survived by brothers, Dan Smith and Paul & Pamela Smith; and sister, Wanda Smith; nieces & nephews, Jason & Adam Smith, D'juna Smith, Daniel Smith, Landon Smith, Emma Self, Leslie Smith, and Joshua Smith; and several close friends.

A Visitation will be held Saturday, December 31, 2016 at the Coffman Funeral home where the family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Coffman Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family of James Alvin "Juke" Smith who passed away on December 28, 2016.
