If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of totaling your vehicle, be sure to retrieve your license plate while you’re gathering your belongings. Once the tag is in hand, local drivers have two options for cancellation: they can either cancel their tag online or contact the Tax Commissioner’s office directly for assistance. Additionally, Hampton recommends keeping the canceled tag in a safe place or personally returning it to their office to ensure it can’t be used by anyone else. As the days grow shorter and the chill of autumn settles in, it’s that time of year again: daylight saving time will officially end on Sunday, November 3, as confirmed by the Old Farmer’s Almanac. The clock change will take place at 2 a.m. local time, rather than the more commonly assumed midnight. To avoid confusion, the Almanac recommends setting your clocks back an hour before heading to bed on Saturday night.
A routine traffic stop on Highway 114 North led to the arrest of Hilario Lopez Duarte, a 38-year-old male from Honduras, for driving without a license. The incident occurred when a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a 2009 GMC Sierra pickup truck with a dim tag light, which was insufficient for visibility. As the deputy approached the vehicle in the Subway parking lot at the intersection of Rome Boulevard and Highway 48, he requested the driver’s license. Duarte responded that he did not possess a valid license and instead provided an identification card issued in Honduras. Given the circumstances, the deputy instructed Duarte to exit the vehicle and arranged for the passenger to call for someone to retrieve the truck. While waiting for a licensed driver to arrive, Duarte was placed under arrest for the driving offense. He was subsequently transported to the local jail, where a citation was issued, and he received a warning regarding the tag light violation. During the booking process, a background check revealed an outstanding warrant from Hamilton County, Tennessee, prompting authorities to place a hold for extradition.
In September, Georgia’s economy showed steady growth, adding 6,800 jobs and experiencing a slight increase in unemployment. Over the past year, the state added 66,900 jobs, despite the Federal Reserve’s efforts to combat inflation with high interest rates.
The Marsh House Museum will offer its Annual Ghost Tour on October 24, 25, 26, from 6-8 PM. It will include a Candlelight Tour of the house furnished for the Halloween Season, then a walk to the Marsh tombstones in the La Fayette Cemetery, and refreshments served by a witch around a campfire.
Walker County, in partnership with Terracon Consultants, will host a community meeting tonight to discuss the county’s brownfield grant program. The meeting will include updates on properties enrolled in the program, such as the Peerless Woolen Mill and Crystal Springs Print Works Mill. Property owners will have the opportunity to learn how to get involved in the program. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p. m. at the Walker County Civic Center in Rock Spring. Brownfield sites are properties with potential environmental contamination that hinder their full use. In 2023, Walker County initiated a program to assess and clean up 30 brownfield sites with funding from a $500,000 grant from the EPA, shared with the cities of Chickamauga, LaFayette, and Rossville.
