Menlo Elementary School (MES) will host its Annual Veterans Day Program on November 8, 2024, at 9:00 AM, inviting the entire community to pay tribute to veterans. The event will feature a musical performance by students from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade, honoring veterans through song. Local veterans Mike Sellers and David Houston will be guest speakers, sharing their experiences and sacrifices. Parents, family, and community members are encouraged to join in honoring those who have protected their nation. The program aims to create a celebratory atmosphere filled with gratitude and respect for the sacrifices made by veterans. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers, along with teams from other states and local college students, provided aid in the affected areas. Students from Valdosta State University joined forces with volunteers at Northside Baptist Church in Valdosta to help with relief efforts, including unloading food trucks and assisting recovery teams. Additionally, students from Georgia Southern University and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College also participated in storm relief activities within their communities.

Motorists traveling on Interstate 75 can expect delays next week as maintenance crews begin resurfacing work in Whitfield County, weather permitting. The project is set to take place on Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22, from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. On Monday, the right northbound lane of I-75 will be closed between mileposts 332 and 334, while Tuesday will see the left northbound lane closed between mileposts 337 and 339. Drivers are advised to plan accordingly and seek alternate routes if possible to minimize inconvenience during the resurfacing process. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) urges all motorists to exercise caution in the work zones and to be mindful of reduced speed limits. The resurfacing is part of ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance road safety across the region. The Trion Bulldogs defeated Greenville 43-12 on Friday night.  The Bulldogs are now 8-1 on the season and will take on Bowden on the road next week.  The Chattooga Indians were off last night and will take on Dade County next week.

A fire on Thursday night displaced a Menlo family.  Firefighters from Menlo, Summerville and Hays State Prison battled the blaze.  The house, located at 115 Polk Street, was a total loss, according to reports.  As of Friday evening, the cause of the fire was not disclosed.  Friends and family are gathering items for the displaced family.  You can see a list of what is needed and how you can help below:
