According to a report released this week by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, earlier this month, Sebastian Gilberto-Pedro Jose, 36, was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) and various traffic violations after a traffic stop. A deputy spotted his blue Honda Civic around 12:27 AM on Central Avenue with a dark license plate, prompting the stop at Allgood Street and Town Hall Drive. The arresting officer, discovered that Jose was driving without a valid license and smelled of alcohol. Jose admitted to consuming five beers before driving. Another law enforcement officer was called to assist with the sobriety tests due to a language barrier, and Jose showed signs of impairment during the tests. A breath test showed a reading of 0. 123, above the legal limit. Jose agreed to a blood test and was found with an open beer can in the car. He was taken to EMS Station 14 for the test and then arrested for DUI, open container violations, and other traffic offenses.

Northwest Georgia Hunger Ministries has received a $25,000 grant from Georgia Power to fund its hurricane relief services. Following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, the ministry has joined the list of organizations providing aid to the areas most impacted by the storms. The nonprofit has sent food and supplies to North Carolina and Southeast Georgia communities, showing that Rome and the surrounding areas are strong and resilient. The grant is not just for the organization’s hurricane relief efforts but also for continuing serving the community. On average, NWGA Hunger Ministries serves 1,200 families monthly through their pantry and food distribution programs. One of the ministry’s most used services is its Backpack Buddies Program, which provides students in Rome, Floyd County, Chattooga County, and Polk County with food for weekends and during school breaks. To receive aid from the ministry, people need a referral at the United Way of Rome and Floyd County or the Goodwill Career Center. Referrals save the nonprofit time, as their pantry is only open for two hours a day.
