Two Vehicle Accident In Trion Saturday

The Trion Fire Department, along with Trion Police and the Georgia State Patrol responded to an accident on Highway 27 at Central Avenue on Saturday.  The stoplights at the intersection were malfunctioning for a period of time as a result of the accident.  The Georgia Department of Transportation was called in to repair the flashing red lights.  WZQZ News will have more information on the accident when it is released by law enforcement.

Chattooga County Teachers Of The Year Honored At BOE Meeting

The Chattooga Board of Education honored five teachers as “Teachers of the Year” at their respective schools.  All five were recognized at the board of education meeting that was held this past Thursday.  They included:

Trion Bulldogs & Chattooga Indians Remain Undefeated

 

The Trion Bulldogs and the Chattooga Indians remain undefeated after Friday’s contests.  Both teams were on home turf last night and for the first time in twenty-four years, both teams were still undefeated mid-way into the high school football schedules.

Chattooga County Administration Public Meeting Next Tuesday

Next Tuesday, September 24th, there will be a Chattooga County Administration Public Meeting.  Commissioner Blake Elsberry, along with the heads of various county departments will conduct the meeting and evaluate the past month and discuss upcoming events and projects.  The public is invited to attend the meeting that will be held at the Chattooga County Civic Center, located at 44 Highway 48 in Summerville across from Truist Bank.  The meeting will be held at 10 AM. During these sessions, department heads from various sectors such as Public Works, Water District, Code Enforcement, EMA 911, and the Clerk’s office, along with the Commissioner present comprehensive reports and address any questions or concerns raised by members of the public.

 

GEMA / HS Awards Gang Activity Prosecution Grants

The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) has been awarded $1,250,000 in the Fiscal Year 2025 State of Georgia budget for the competitive Gang Activity Prosecution Grant (GAP Grant). This funding will support enhanced efforts to prosecute gang-related activities and bolster community safety initiatives.

Summerville City Council Meeting On Monday

The Summerville City Council will hold a called meeting coming up on Monday, September 23, 2024 at 5:30 PM.  According to an agenda released by the city on Friday, there will be an executive session for council members to discuss pending litigation.  Also, the city engineer and experts will be presenting information about PFAS remediation at the Raccoon Creek Water Treatment Plant.   The meeting is open to the public.

State Election Board Approves Controversial “Hand Count” Rule

Despite warnings from Georgia’s Attorney General and Georgia’s Secretary of State, the Georgia State Election Board passed a rule this week that would require hand counting of ballots at the county level after the polls close on election day.

Early Morning Accident On Highway 27 Friday Morning

An accident on Highway 27 on Friday morning shut down traffic for several hours.  Morning commuters were being routed around the ridge while emergency responders and law enforcement worked the accident with injuries.  WZQZ requested information from the Georgia State Patrol Public Information Office and was told that a preliminary report would not be ready until Saturday.  WZQZ News will have updated information as it becomes available.
