Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King announced recently that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) confirmed approval for Georgia to transition to a State-based Exchange (SBE), otherwise known as Georgia Access. Georgia Access will go live as the official health insurance marketplace on November 1, 2024, as Open Enrollment 2025 commences.

A fifty-one-year-old Chattooga County man was jailed earlier this month after threatening to shoot employees at the Chattooga County Water District on Old Highway 27 in Trion. According to a report released by the sheriff’s office last week, William Shane Lowrance came to the water district office to complain about his water bill. Lowrance was said to have screamed obscenities and yelled at the employees. Employees with the water district tried to appease Lowrance, but he left still yelling and cursing. A short time later, Lowrance returned, and this time, he threatened to retrieve a gun and shoot one of the employees. Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on the scene and placed Lowrance under arrest and charged him with terroristic threats and acts and disorderly conduct. He was booked into the Chattooga County Jail on August 7th.

The Summerville City Council will have a called meeting coming up tomorrow evening at Summerville City Hall. The council has negotiated terms of a contract with Jason Winters, former Chattooga County Commissioner, and is expected to vote on Monday evening to accept that contract and name Winters as City Manager. Winters was one of three finalists for the position. The council began their search for a new city manager after Andrea Surratt announced her intentions to leave the position earlier this year. Surratt served as city manager less than two years. The council voted unanimously to offer the position to Winters. Also, at tomorrow’s meeting, the council is expected to authorize Mayor Harry Harvey to sign a letter of support for Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry to seek a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission for the ongoing restoration at the Tooga Theater in downtown Summerville. The public is invited to attend Monday’s meeting.
Several Georgia State Park and Historic Site employees were honored yesterday during the annual Managers Conference. Accomplishments include improving Georgia’s natural habitats, protecting historic structures, leading outstanding ranger programs, rescues, major renovation projects, customer service excellence and more. Dozens of managers attended an awards ceremony celebrating those who make more than 60 State Parks and Historic Sites outstanding destinations across Georgia. They also attended training sessions and shared ideas on park operations within the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Katy Gramling, park manager for James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State park in Summerville received the “Most Outstanding Site Operation Award”. Gramling and her team have a great attitude of “do a lot with a little.” Even when faced with staffing challenges, they keep accurate budget reports, develop and meet goals that highlight excellence, and repair utilities – all while welcoming park guests and offering ranger programs. Also, Sloppy Floyd State Park’s sole housekeeper, Anne Seagrave, was nominated for the Outstanding Housekeeping Award during this year’s ranger conference.
