Menlo Elementary School PTO is inviting parents – and grandparents – to attend the PTO meeting in September. It will be “Grandparents Night” on Thursday, September 5th. There will be snacks, crafts and a photo booth and an open house from 4 PM until 6 PM. Parents and grandparents will also be able to visit classrooms and are invited to stay for the PTO meeting at 6 PM.

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says that his office is collaborating with the Masonic Lodges of Chattooga County to offer the Georgia Child Identification Program, (GA CHIP). The program will be available to parents now through Sunday at the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair.

While the county government and local school system has no plans to raise property taxes, the Town of Lyerly is planning an increase in property taxes for its property owners. The Lyerly Town Council has announced a meeting later this month concerning the proposed property tax increase.

According to numbers released this week by the Georgia Department of Labor, the unemployment rate in Chattooga County was unchanged from June to July of this year and stands at 4.7%.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) was named a southern regional winner in the 2024 America’s Transportation Awards during the Southeastern (SASHTO) annual conference held in Arkansas this year. The America’s Transportation Awards competition, sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, showcases how state DOT projects strengthen local communities by improving travel safety, reducing roadway congestion and providing more travel options for people.

The Chattooga County Ag Fair continues this evening with gates opening at 5 PM. The cost is $5 for gate admission, but tonight is also veteran and military appreciation night. Any active service military or veteran will get free gate admission.
