Summerville Police Chief Brian Ozment was named “acting city manager” by the Summerville City Council this week as the council enters negotiations with former Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters, who has been selected as the city’s next city manager.  Ozment said this week that he does not plan to make any significant changes and that he is honored that the council has chosen him to “hold the reigns” until Winters takes over.  Winters was selected as the finalist out of three potential candidates for city manager at a meeting held on Monday.  The council will be negotiating the terms of Winters contract over the next several days and will then have a final vote on accepting the negotiated contract and naming Winters city manager.

A fundraiser for the Chattooga 4H Shotgun Team will be held next Saturday at the Floyd County Wildlife Club, located just off Highway 100, just across the Chattooga-Floyd County line.  The sporting clays fundraiser will take place on Saturday, August 24th at 9 AM.  The registration fee is $500 for a four-person team.  All participants will need to provide their own shells and sign a waiver provided by the Floyd County Wildlife Club.  Lunch is included.  The first place team will receive an $800 cash prize, and there will be various door prizes given away.  You can secure your team’s spot by contacting John Smith at 706-978-9182 or BJ Montgomery at 706-676-6710.

Celery was used to conceal more than 2,300 pounds of methamphetamine that federal agents discovered in a truck at a farmers market outside Atlanta, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said. In what the DEA called one of the largest seizures of its kind, agents confiscated the drugs being delivered to the Atlanta State Farmers Market in Forest Park.

A twenty-three-year-old man was arrested on Monday of this week at an apartment complex in Summerville after he caused a scene and damaged a door.  According to Summerville Police, Officer Jacob Pledger, he responded to a call at Summerville Gardens about a man who was being loud and boisterous and was disturbing the peace.  When the officer arrived on the scene, he arrested Gavin Knight who was, according to the officer, being “loud and belligerent, disturbing the peace of the neighboring apartments”.  Knight was also accused of damaging a door at one of the apartments.  Knight was arrested and taken to the Chattooga County Jail.

On Tuesday of this week, Summerville Police responded to a domestic incident at a Hawkins Drive address.  Police say that an seventy-two-year-old woman, identified as Peggy Perry,  was accused of attacking a forty-three-year-old woman, identified as Audrey Wooten,  with a cane after the younger woman refused to mop the floor.  Police said that the older woman told the younger woman she would give her a “pain pill and a hydrocodone” if she would mop the floor.  Police said that Perry got angry after she gave the pills to Wooten and then she didn’t mop the floors and Perry then attacked Wooten woman with her cane. Perry maintained that she was just defending herself with the cane.  Both Perry and Wooten were arrested and taken to the Chattooga County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct.
