Lawmakers and civil rights leaders are questioning the decision to drop an African American social studies class from school curriculums across the state. A group of Georgia legislators and civil rights leaders gathered at the Gold Dome in Atlanta on Wednesday to call for the class to be reinstated.

Three men were involved in a physical confrontation in Lyerly that landed one man in jail and the other two with warrants for their arrest. According to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, on the evening of July 18th, Levi McGuire was riding by a Tennessee Avenue address in Lyerly hollering profanities. McGuire, who was the passenger in the vehicle, then jumped out of the moving car and confronted people in the yard. The report did not indicate what the raucous was all about, but did say McGuire, Christopher Bryant and Kirby Reed were all involved in the altercation. McGuire ended up at the emergency department in Trion due to injuries. The report didn’t say if the injuries were from the fight or from McGuire jumping out of a moving car. While deputies were at the emergency department speaking with McGuire, the other two men showed up. Christopher Bryant said Kirby Reed brought him to the emergency department due to a heart condition. Deputies arrested Kirby Reed and took out warrants on the other two men who were receiving medical treatment. All three were charged with affray.
Numbers released yesterday by the Georgia Department of Labor show that unemployment is up in the Northwest Georgia region.

Work continues on the Chattooga & Chickamauga Railroad crossing near the intersection of Rome Boulevard (US Highway 27) and The Lyerly Highway (GA Highway 114). Summerville City Councilman Joe Money says that the railroad operations manager told him that they have “settled some of the lag screws in the concrete to hopefully settle some of the rocking motion and will be meeting with an asphalt company out of Chattanooga Thursday (today), to discuss removing the loose panels and placing concrete. Hopefully they can do some repairs next week”.
At the start of an international trip to promote the No. 1 state for business and further job creation in Georgia, Governor Brian P. Kemp on Tuesday announced that S&P Global Ratings reaffirmed its “AAA with a stable outlook” assessment for the state’s credit worthiness. Because the state did not issue new general obligation bonds for the current fiscal year, the other two main credit rating agencies — FitchRatings and Moody’s Investors Service — did not issue formal reports for Georgia’s bond ratings. The prior year, both agencies gave Georgia the highest possible ratings in their analyses of the state’s credit worthiness.
Fall armyworms are confirmed in Chattooga County. Armyworms are by far the dreaded caterpillar in pastures and hayfields, according to Chattooga County Extension Agent Rebecca Thomas.
