Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry, the national venison donation ministry, has launched a new Hunt Down Hunger campaign. Hunt Down Hunger is a national campaign encouraging hunters across America to help feed the hungry by donating their legally harvested game such as deer and elk to local hunger relief charities and ministries. The campaign will help individuals and families this Christmas season and beyond, as costs for necessities such as food and fuel have risen.
Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s (GNTC) Precision Machining and Manufacturing program on the Floyd County and Whitfield Murray campuses was presented with a $30,000 grant by the Gene Haas Foundation to be used for student scholarships.
A forty-nine-year-old Summerville man was arrested recently after stuffing food items down his pants at the Circle K Convenience Store on Commerce Street. According to a report from the Summerville Police Department, a store employee called police after seeing Kevin Alphonso Boykin stuff several candy bars and some sausage and cheese biscuits down his pants. When the officer approached Boykin, he found that the suspect still had some beef sticks, Snicker bars and two cold orange Gatorades inside his britches. In all, Boykin was accused of attempting to steal $42.97 worth of food items. Boykin was charged with shoplifting and was banned from both Circle K stores in Summerville.

An accident over the weekend in Cherokee County, Georgia took the life of a northwest Georgia mayor and his wife and the Georgia State Patrol has charged a fifty-year-old Calhoun man with vehicular homicide in connection with that fatal crash.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger congratulated District Attorney Chris Arnt of the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit on a successful prosecution of voter fraud.
The City of Menlo is looking to apply for a grant and use available state-backed, low-interest loans to rehabilitate the city’s water system. Mayor Allen Keen told the Summerville News last week that the city will be working on getting the well on McWhorter Road back up and running. The mayor says that well can supply the city with plenty of water, and eliminate the need for purchasing water from the Chattooga County Water District. Keen says that he is working with the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority for the funding needed to do the needed work. The well on McWhorter Road produces over 432,000 gallons of water a day, and Mayor Keen says that is more than enough for the City of Menlo’s water customers.
Georgia gas prices continue to decline at the pump compared to a week ago. Georgia drivers are now paying an average price of $2.88 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average was 8 cents less than a week ago, 29 cents less than a month ago, and 27 cents less than this time last year. It now costs $43.20 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Drivers are now paying almost $5.00 less to fill-up at the pump compared to last month.
Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton issued a statement on Monday about tax collections. The tax commissioner said, “Now that the due date for 2022 property taxes has passed, I have compiled a report on collections thus far. As of this morning, we have collected 80.72% for 2022, 98.71% for 2021 and 99.84% for 2020 property taxes. The older years have some parcels that are protected by bankruptcy, and a few are working under a payment plan. Others that are still unpaid for 2021 and earlier will go to the collections company for tax sales in 2023. I still have about $2.3 million to collect for 2022, and I expect the bulk of that to be paid once people start getting their tax refunds in the spring.”
