AAA: Drivers Stay Alert As Children Return To School

As 1.6 million children across Georgia begin heading back to school, AAA urges motorists to slow down, stay alert in neighborhoods and school zones. Also, to be especially vigilant for pedestrians during before- and after-school hours. Children are particularly vulnerable during the afternoon hours following their school day. Over the last decade, nearly one-third of child pedestrian fatalities occurred between 3 and 6 p.m.

Chattooga Man Sentenced For Growing Marijuana

A Chattooga County man was sentenced in Superior Court for growing marijuana on his property.  According to court records, Charlie William Hawkins of an Old Highway 27 address, pleaded guilty in Chattooga County Superior Court to growing eight marijuana plants on his property.  In January of this year, drug agents with the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force found the plants growing inside Hawkins’ home.  Drug agents also found a glass pipe with suspected methamphetamine residue and a firearm. Hawkins was sentenced to five years, suspended if he completes a day reporting program.  Hawkins was also fined $2,296.

Hospital Coalition Releases Statement

A group calling themselves the “Northwest Georgia Hospital Coalition” released a statement on Monday condemning Parkridge Hospital’s appeal to the State of Georgia to block a planned new hospital in Northwest Georgia.  The group is made of up of concerned citizens and supported by elected officials in Dade, Walker and Catoosa Counties.  The group says that Northwest Georgia is a growing community and deserves a new hospital and calls on Parkridge CEO Tom Ozborne to withdraw his appeal to the State of Georgia.  You can read the full press release from the Northwest Georgia Hospital Coalition below:

Mr. Christopher Scott Greene, Obit (C)

Mr. Christopher Scott Greene, age 61 of Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday, July 21, 2022 at a local healthcare center.

Mr. Greene was born in Trion, Georgia on January 15, 1961, son of the late Scott Lee Greene and Jeannette G. Goodson Greene.  He had been employed as a body man with Pledger’s for many years and he loved spending time working on cars.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Greene was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Ann McWhorter Greene; brother, Michael Greene; and a granddaughter, Mariah Journey Womack-Laney.

Mr. Greene is survived by a son, Christopher Greene; daughter, Jessica Greene; step children, Coty Williamson, Megan Robbins and Wade Laney; sisters, Lisa(Wayne) Craig and Karen(Buster) Spivey; brothers, Jason Greene and Jeff Greene; 5 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside and Interment services for Mr. Greene will be held Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at 4:00 P.M. in the West Hill Cemetery with Rev. Ken Johnson officiating.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Greene, Justin Rhinehart, Russell Greene, Leonard Greene, Buster Spivey and Koby Bunner.

Mr. Greene will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 P.M. until 3:30 P.M.

Handgun Reported Stolen In Summerville

Summerville Police received a report about a stolen handgun last week.  According to a report from the Summerville Police Department, Tristan Lively of a Butler Dairy Road address told police that a handgun was stolen from his car while he was at the car wash at 895 Highland Avenue.  The gun was a Taurus G3 9mm pistol with an extended magazine.  Lively said that he wanted to report the theft to police in case the gun was used in a crime.  Lively was not able to give the serial number of the weapon to police.
