A thirty-two-year-old Cedartown woman was arrested on Christmas Day in Chattooga County after she left her child in the car, in 30 degree weather, for an hour while she played games inside a convenience store.
The Georgia General Assembly will begin its 40-day legislative session starting next week. The Georgia House and Georgia Senate will convene for the new session on Monday, January 9, 2022. Chattooga County will have new representation in the Georgia Senate for the first time in over two decades.
Mr. Herbert Juan Hughes, age 83, of Summerville, GA, died Sunday, January 1, 2023, at his residence.
Mr. Hughes was born March 9, 1939, in Summerville, GA, son of the late Alfred Lee and Dorothy Mae Alred Hughes. He was Baptist by faith, and prior to his retirement, had been employed with Mount Vernon Mills. He was also a veteran of the United States Army.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the American Legion and the Chattooga County Saddle Club. He was also a member of the Quarter Century Club at Mount Vernon Mills where he had 45 total years of service. He was known for his tractor work throughout the county and the many years of service he provided to families including tilling and plowing gardens, bush hogging, and yard work. He spent many years traveling to mule pulls with friends and his brother, Hugh Don. He owned many pairs of mules and wagons throughout his life and went on rides with the Saddle Club and his family. He grew vegetable gardens each summer and loved raising chickens, collecting antiques, and working in his yard.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his brother, Hugh Don Hughes.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Hughes; daughters, Rhonda (Phil) Williams, Ericka (Stacy) Young; grandchildren, Jarrod and Logan Broome, Rhett and Erin Tucker; uncle and aunt, Eugene and Ursula Alred.
Memorial services for Mr. Hughes will be held at 4:30 P.M. Thursday, January 5, 2023, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. David Alred officiating.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at Mason Funeral Home from 3:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Thursday.

The latest round of numbers from the Georgia Department of Labor show that Chattooga County has the second-highest unemployment rate in Northwest Georgia. The numbers that were recently released show an unemployment rate of 3.7% in Chattooga County.

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says that the move to the former GBI Crime Lab near Hays State Prison has had a lot of positive affects on his office and staff. In addition to a lot more space to work, the new facility offers a dedicated conference room and training facilities. Also, the investigations team now has their own space in the building.
As we head into the new year, the State of Georgia heads into new territory with the establishment of its own health insurance portal. The new website is called Georgia Access and it was created to help residents find their way to private insurers and brokers to purchase health insurance. People who visit the online portal will see links to 10 health insurance companies and links to seven insurance brokers. Earlier this year, the Peach State was denied approval to leave the federal insurance marketplace, resulting in the establishment of https://georgiaaccess.gov/ while the federal portal can be found at https://www.healthcare.gov/
The Rome News Tribune reported on Saturday that a Rome woman is charged in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a Floyd County man whose body was found on the side of a Polk County highway this past week.
The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control issued a warning recently about a new increase in Pediatric Invasive Group A streptococcal infection-or I-GAS. The CDC says it’s an infection that can lead to flesh-eating bacterial disease as well as toxic shock syndrome and can result in organ failure. Health officials say the levels of I-Gas infection in children nationwide is above what was seen in the first two years of the pandemic. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Georgia Department of Public Health says I-Gas cases are showing an uptick here, but the department was unable to provide a number on recent cases.
