Georgia gas prices continue to decline at the pump compared to a week ago. Georgia drivers are now paying an average price of $2.88 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average was 8 cents less than a week ago, 29 cents less than a month ago, and 27 cents less than this time last year. It now costs $43.20 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Drivers are now paying almost $5.00 less to fill-up at the pump compared to last month.
Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton issued a statement on Monday about tax collections. The tax commissioner said, “Now that the due date for 2022 property taxes has passed, I have compiled a report on collections thus far. As of this morning, we have collected 80.72% for 2022, 98.71% for 2021 and 99.84% for 2020 property taxes. The older years have some parcels that are protected by bankruptcy, and a few are working under a payment plan. Others that are still unpaid for 2021 and earlier will go to the collections company for tax sales in 2023. I still have about $2.3 million to collect for 2022, and I expect the bulk of that to be paid once people start getting their tax refunds in the spring.”
’Tis the season to travel, and AAA estimates over 3.5 million Georgians will journey 50 miles or more away from home, December 23rd to January 2nd. That’s an increase of almost 113,000 people over last year and a new record-high for the year-end holiday travel period in Georgia.
A twenty-six-year-old Summerville woman was arrested in Walker County over the weekend. According to docket records from the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, Tanzania Malawi Glenn of a Dry Valley Road address was charged with being a public drunk, willful obstruction of law enforcement and battery. Glenn was booked into the Walker County Jail on the charges overnight on Saturday.

There was a slight decline in Georgia tax revenues in the month of November, according to numbers released by the Georgia Department of Revenue on Friday of last week. The state collected almost $2.29 billion in November, which was down $2.4 million or about a tenth-of-a-point from the same time last year. Last month marked the first time in over a year that tax revenues have been lower. Still, the state has over $6.6 billion in surplus revenue. One area that is causing a dip in state revenues is the motor fuel tax, which is down over 99% since Governor Kemp suspended state tax for most motor fuel. The governor announced another extension of the fuel tax again last week.

COVID-19 cases were down slightly in Chattooga County over the past reporting period. Cases are reported weekly by the Georgia Department of Public Health. The new statistics come out on Wednesday of each week. The previous reporting period, there were eight new COVID-19 cases reported in Chattooga County, that number dropped to seven. There were two COVID-19 deaths reported in Northwest Georgia, one in Floyd County and one in Bartow County. There were twenty-six COVID-19 patients being reported at Rome hospitals – the highest number since September.
