City Crews Working On Retaining Wall

Summerville Public Works crews are working on a retaining wall and that will result in street closures again on Friday.  The City said, “The City of Summerville will have University St closed from College St to E. Washington St on Friday, December 16,2022, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.”.  In addition to that street closure, East Washington Street will be closed from Commerce Street to the Depot on Friday morning in preparation for Christmas in the Park – which has been moved from Dowdy Park to the East Washington Streetscape due to the wet conditions at the park.  The city’s Christmas celebration will be held from 6 PM – 9 PM tomorrow.

Santa At The Library This Evening

The Chattooga County Library in Summerville is hosting the Student Holiday Craft Night coming up this evening at 6 PM.  WZQZ News spoke with Santa Claus this morning and he wanted us to remind kids about this event.  Santa will be visiting the library this evening to talk with the kids.  Participants will be able to choose from five different crafts to make, plus they will be able to make an edible craft to enjoy.  Free pictures with Santa this evening at 6 PM at the library in Summerville.

Controversy Over Land Ordinance Continues

Controversy over Chattooga County’s land use ordinance continues.  Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry reiterated to WZQZ News this week that the purpose of the ordinance is to have control over “large scale developments” in the county, but opponents of the ordinance contend that the language in the ordinance does not indicate that the rules will only be applied to large scale developments.

Chatsworth Man Charged With DUI In Summerville

A Summerville police officer clocked a white Lexus doing 50 mph in a 35 mph speed zone on Rome Boulevard late Monday night.  The officer initiated a traffic stop and spoke with the driver, identified as twenty-two-year-old Nicholas Gage Patton of a Chatsworth address.  The officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol on Patton.  According to Summerville Police, Patton alternated between arguing, resisting and crying while speaking with the officer. Patton was jailed on charges of DUI for alcohol, speeding and having an open container of alcohol and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

Coosa Valley Habitat Celebrates 58th Home Build

Habitat for Humanity — Coosa Valley will celebrate its 58th home with a dedication on Sunday, December 18 at 3 PM.  The build at 1400 Gordon Avenue in Rome began in May. Over 130 volunteers gave their time of more than 1,400 hours of work, in order to make the home ready for the Bowers family.
