Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson passed away Sunday at the age of 59 after battling pancreatic cancer. Thompson took office in 2023 and inherited a struggling Department of Labor. He uncovered $105 million in mishandled funds and continued working despite his illness.

Chattooga County Coroner Earle Rainwater was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Coroner’s Association at the organization’s fall meeting held in Warner Robbins over the weekend. In presenting the award on Saturday, Rainwater was recognized by his peers statewide for his 48 years of service as Coroner of Chattooga County.
In a significant milestone for the state of Georgia, the U.S. Senate has recently passed the Ocmulgee Mounds Park and Preserve Establishment Act, paving the way for the state’s first national park.
After a nice day today, a cold front is moving into northwest Georgia tonight and into Tuesday, bringing increased chances of showers but rainfall totals are not expected to be significant. Weak high pressure will briefly dry things out on Tuesday and Wednesday before showers and thunderstorms return on Thanksgiving Day. Models show disagreement on the strength and track of the surface low associated with the moisture, but a wet beginning to Thanksgiving is looking likely. Rain chances will taper off on Thursday afternoon. Rainfall amounts are uncertain but could be up to 1-1.5″ in Northwest Georgia. Breezy conditions are expected on Friday, with drier and cooler air moving in for the weekend. So, temperatures will be warmer before Thanksgiving, with highs in the mid-50s to 60s, dropping to the mid-40s to 50s afterward. Lows will also fluctuate between the mid-30s to 50s until the weekend, when we could see the coldest temperatures of the season, with overnight lows expected in the mid-20s.
Chattooga County has seen an increase in unemployment over the past month, with the rate jumping just shy of two percentage points from September to October.

The Georgia State Senate Study Committee on the Preservation of Georgia’s Farmlands is set to hold its final meeting today at 10 AM, at the State Capitol. Chaired by Senator Billy Hickman (R–Statesboro), the meeting will focus on proposing and adopting the committee’s final report regarding the critical issue of farmland preservation in the state.
The Chattooga 4-H Shotgun Team held a Ham and Turkey Shoot over the weekend. The shoot was held on Saturday at the old landfill off Butler Dairy Road in Summerville. Organizers say that the shotgun team was able to raise around $900 at the shoot. Another ham and turkey shoot is being planned before Christmas.
